Picture this: the sun barely dips below the horizon, the road ahead runs straight through birch forest toward the Arctic Circle, and you have a motorcycle under you instead of a tour bus timetable. That's Rovaniemi in summer. You can ride out to the Arctic Circle marker at Santa Claus Village, watch huskies and reindeer up close, then keep going — the fells and rivers just past the city limits are where the real riding starts.
The city centre itself is small and easy, built for walking rather than weaving through traffic. That's exactly why a motorcycle makes sense here: it's not for crossing town, it's for reaching what's beyond it. Ranua and Pyhä-Luosto sit 60–140 km out, distances that turn into a slow bus transfer or a stuck rental car unless you're on two wheels. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Rovaniemi, this is the kind of place where the bike earns its keep the moment you leave the ring road.
Finland follows standard EU licence categories. An A1 licence (up to 125cc) works from age 16, A2 from 18, and a full A licence from 24 — or from 20 with two years on A2. EU licences are valid as they are; an International Driving Permit generally isn't needed, though some operators ask for one anyway if your licence isn't in Latin script. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, often 18 or higher, and hold a deposit on your credit card, with the amount depending on the bike.
Expect 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 45-70 EUR per day in high season, with larger touring or adventure bikes running 80-120+ EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, when daylight is nearly endless but prices and demand peak — book a few weeks ahead if you're coming in July. Low season stretches from November through March, though riding conditions really only return from May, so late May and September give you a good mix of open roads and lower prices before or after the summer rush.
Finland drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorcycle or scooter. Headlights stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are typically 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural roads and up to 120 km/h on motorways, though motorway limits often drop in winter. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5‰, and any collision with an elk or reindeer must be reported to 112 — watch for them at dawn and dusk. Ride safe, and have a nice trip!
