Rotterdam rewards anyone who trades the tram for two wheels. Cross the water on the Erasmusbrug at golden hour, when the skyline turns copper, and you'll understand why locals call it the Swan. Twenty minutes later you can be leaning your bike against a railing at Kinderdijk, watching windmills turn against flat polder sky — a contrast few European cities offer so close to their centre. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Rotterdam, this is exactly the kind of morning-to-afternoon range a bike makes effortless.
Rotterdam was rebuilt almost from scratch after the war, so its centre is wide, modern, and logically gridded — nothing like the tight medieval lanes of Amsterdam. That makes it a genuinely easy place to ride: broad bridges, generous lanes, and parking that a car could only dream of. The flat terrain stretches the same ease out to the countryside, so day trips to Delft or the beach at Hoek van Holland stay short, level rides rather than expeditions. A motorcycle rental in Rotterdam turns the whole province into a loop you can finish before dinner.
Requirements depend on the machine. For a snorfiets or bromfiets (up to 45 km/h) you'll need category AM, included in most car or motorcycle licences, from age 16. Proper motorcycles are graded by power: A1 from 18, A2 from 20, and unrestricted A from 24. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required in the Netherlands. Rental companies will ask for a deposit, usually a card pre-authorisation, and your passport as ID.
Expect roughly 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 40-60 EUR during high season, with premium models running 60-90 EUR per day.
High season runs April to September and peaks in July and August, so book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November to February, is quieter, wetter and cheaper — a good window if you don't mind a jacket and don't need to book far in advance.
Driving is on the right. Helmets are compulsory for motorcycles, mopeds and snorfietsen alike. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (many streets drop to 30 km/h), 80 km/h outside town, and up to 100 km/h on motorways; snorfietsen are capped at 25 km/h and bromfietsen at 45 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.2 g/l for new licence holders. Headlights stay on at all times, and where a cycle path exists, lighter mopeds are often required to use it instead of the road.
