Picture switching Medellín's clogged avenues for the open road up to Alto de Las Palmas, valley spread out beneath you, or weaving down to Comuna 13 without waiting on the metro. Renting a motorcycle in Medellín puts the city's steep comunas, cloud-forest roads and day-trip towns within easy reach, and lets you ride at your own pace instead of someone else's timetable.
Medellín's geography makes this the right vehicle for the job. The city climbs a narrow valley, so streets are steep, winding and often jammed with buses and taxis that barely move at rush hour. A motorcycle slips through that traffic and handles switchback climbs like Las Palmas and Santa Elena the way a car or bus simply can't, while also opening up trips such as Guatapé that are awkward without your own wheels.
Most rental motorcycles in Medellín are 100–125cc, which calls for a motorcycle licence — category A1 for up to 125cc, A2 above that. A car licence alone usually isn't accepted. You'll generally need to be at least 18, though many rental companies set their own higher minimum. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or as a hold on your credit card, along with your passport or ID. An International Driving Permit isn't strictly required, but it's worth carrying one alongside your home licence just in case.
Average rental price is around 110,000–130,000 COP per day during low season, rising to roughly 150,000–200,000 COP per day in high season for a similar scooter or mid-size motorcycle. Larger-displacement or premium bikes run from about 220,000 COP per day and up.
High season runs December–January, Holy Week and the June–August stretch, when it's smart to book ahead and expect higher rates. Low season falls in April–May and October–November, with softer prices and easier availability. Since Medellín's temperature stays mild year-round thanks to its altitude, it's really the rain — not the heat — that shifts by season, so booking around the drier months keeps the mountain roads safer too.
Colombia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and motorcycles must keep their headlights on at all times, day and night. Urban speed limits sit around 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and in residential zones. Alcohol tolerance is essentially zero, with penalties starting at a very low blood-alcohol level, so it's best to treat any riding day as a dry one. Carry your licence and the vehicle's documents, since checkpoints on roads out of the city are routine.
