Lima moves at the speed of its traffic, and its traffic moves slowly — unless you're on two wheels. Weave along the Circuito de Playas as it hugs the cliffs of the Costa Verde, park a few steps from the paragliders drifting over the Malecón de Miraflores, then be in Barranco's murals and cafés before a taxi would have found parking. That's the appeal of a motorcycle here: the city opens up instead of grinding you down.
Lima is really several cities stitched together — Miraflores, Barranco, the historic Centro, the beach towns along the coast — and the distances between them are too long to walk and too congested to enjoy by car. A motorcycle cuts through the horn-heavy traffic, slips into parking spots near the clifftop viewpoints, and turns the curves of the Costa Verde into part of the trip rather than an obstacle to it. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Lima, this is a city built for exactly that.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence, and it's worth carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it, since Peru generally expects one from foreign visitors. The legal minimum age to ride is 18, but most rental companies set their own floor, commonly 21 and sometimes 25 for larger machines. Expect a deposit as well, usually held on a credit card, with your passport or ID copied as part of the booking.
Prices are quoted in PEN. A standard scooter or small-displacement bike runs around 95–100 PEN per day in low season, climbing to roughly 130–160 PEN per day when demand peaks. Larger or premium motorcycles can go from 200 up to 350+ PEN per day depending on the model.
The priciest stretches are July–August, when Peruvian winter still brings a wave of domestic and Southern Hemisphere holiday travel, and December–January, as Lima's summer and beach season kick in around Christmas and New Year. For better rates, aim for April–June or September–October, the shoulder months when tourist numbers thin out and scooters and motorcycles are easier to book on short notice.
Peru drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorcycle. Speed limits generally run around 30 km/h near schools and hospitals, 40 km/h on ordinary city streets, and up to 60 km/h on the wider avenues. The legal blood alcohol limit is low, 0.5 g/L, and checkpoints are common, so don't ride after drinking. Lima's traffic is dense and quick with the horn, and lane discipline is more of a suggestion than a rule — ride defensively, especially around the Centro and the busier avenues feeding into the Costa Verde.
