Lima doesn't reveal itself from a taxi window. The city's real rhythm — surfers paddling out below the cliffs, couples watching the sunset from Parque del Amor, the smell of anticuchos drifting off the Malecón de Miraflores — is best felt at bike speed, slow enough to stop, fast enough to cover ground. A bike lets you ride the clifftop path in the morning, drop down to the beach by midday and still make it to Barranco's cobbled lanes for the evening light.
Lima was practically built for this. The Circuito de Playas runs as a dedicated coastal path for kilometres below the cliffs, linking San Miguel to Chorrillos without a single set of car headlights to dodge. Up top, the malecones of Miraflores and Barranco are flat, paved and largely closed off from traffic. Meanwhile downtown, Lima's one-way grid and permanent congestion make a taxi genuinely slower than pedalling — a bike slips through where cars queue, and opens up detours a bus route would never take.
None of it requires a licence. There's no registration, no IDP, and no minimum age beyond common sense — bicycles sit entirely outside Peru's motor-vehicle rules. Most shops will still ask for a small deposit, usually a credit-card hold, and may hold onto a copy of your passport or ID for the day. If you want to rent a bike in Lima, bring ID and a card — that's the whole checklist.
A basic city bike runs from around 12 PEN a day in low season up to 25–35 PEN a day in high season, while mountain bikes and e-bikes sit higher, roughly 50–80 PEN a day.
December to March is Lima's high season — sunny coastal weather, the beaches full, and prices at their peak, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving over the holidays. May to September is both the cheapest and, for many riders, the most comfortable time to be on two wheels: overcast skies, mild temperatures and thinner crowds along the malecón, with rates dropping accordingly.
Peru drives on the right, and while a bicycle doesn't legally require a helmet the way a scooter does, wearing one is strongly recommended given Lima's dense, horn-heavy traffic and informal lane discipline. Stick to the dedicated paths along the Costa Verde and the malecones where you can — once you leave them for city streets, urban speed limits run around 40 km/h, rising to 60 km/h on the main avenues, and drivers won't always slow down for you. If you're renting a scooter or motorcycle instead, note that Peru's 0.5 g/L blood alcohol limit is strictly enforced at roadside checkpoints.
