Eindhoven doesn't look like a motorcycle city at first glance — it's compact, flat and easy on foot — but the moment you point a bike east toward Nuenen, the appeal clicks into place. Twenty minutes out you're rolling through the village where Van Gogh once lived and painted, and from there the quiet back roads of Brabant just keep unspooling. Rent a motorcycle in Eindhoven and the city becomes a launchpad rather than a destination: you can be having coffee on Strijp-S at noon and carving curves through De Kempen by mid-afternoon.
The city centre itself is small enough to walk, so a motorcycle earns its keep once you're outside the ring roads. Nuenen, De Kempen, De Groote Peel and the Loonse en Drunense Duinen are all short, curvy rides away on minor roads that reward two wheels far more than four. It's also the easiest way to reach day-trip towns like Kaatsheuvel, home of Efteling, without waiting on regional trains or buses.
Requirements depend on the machine. Scooters and mopeds fall under category AM (included in a car or full motorcycle licence), with a minimum age of 16. Motorcycles run on graduated categories: A1 from age 18, A2 from 20, and unrestricted category A direct access from 24. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required in the Netherlands. Expect to leave a deposit — a card pre-authorisation or cash — along with your passport, and note that rental companies often set their own minimum ages and experience requirements on top of the legal ones.
During low season, economy bikes and scooters run around EUR 25–35 per day. In high season, mid-size motorcycles climb to roughly EUR 45–70 per day, while larger touring or premium models — think BMW or Harley-Davidson — can reach EUR 80–120 per day.
High season runs from April to September, with July and August the tightest and priciest stretch — book ahead if you're planning a summer trip. Low season, from November to February, brings cheaper rates but wetter, windier riding with short daylight hours. For the best mix of good weather and reasonable prices, aim for May, June or September.
Traffic drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for motorcycles, mopeds and, since January 2023, snorfietsen too — cyclists are the only exception. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (many streets drop to 30 km/h), 80 km/h outside town, and up to 100 km/h on motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.2 g/l for novice licence holders, and it applies to cyclists as well. Motorcycles and mopeds must run with dipped headlights at all times, day or night, and where a cycle path exists, cyclists are required to use it.
