Picture rolling along the Zürichsee shore with the water on one side and the Alps sketched in on the other, then ducking into the cobbled lanes of the Altstadt for a coffee under the towers of the Grossmünster. That's an ordinary afternoon when you rent a bike in Zurich. Trams and boats will get you around, but nothing lets you string together the lake, the Old Town and a mountaintop view in one easy loop the way two wheels do.
Zurich's city centre is small, mostly flat and laced with dedicated lakeside bike paths, so pedalling is often faster than waiting for the next tram and far less complicated than juggling connections. A bicycle also opens up longer rides public transport can't really match, like the lakeshore run out to Rapperswil, while the short, steep climb up the Üetliberg rewards you with the best panorama in town.
For a normal bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h, you don't need any licence at all. Faster e-bikes, the ones assisted up to 45 km/h, legally count as mopeds and call for a moped licence plus a yellow insurance plate, so double-check which type you're booking. Rental shops usually ask for a minimum age, often around 16-18, and take a deposit — small for a standard bike, larger for an e-bike. An International Driving Permit is not required for a regular bicycle rental.
A standard city bike runs roughly CHF 8-15 per day in low season and CHF 15-30 per day in high season, while e-bikes typically cost CHF 35-60 per day given the extra battery and motor.
High season runs June to September, when the lake paths are busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with noticeably cheaper daily rates but colder, shorter riding days. If you're after the best mix of mild weather and manageable prices, aim for May, early June or September.
Switzerland drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Riders of fast 45 km/h e-bikes must wear a helmet by law; on an ordinary bicycle a helmet isn't mandatory, but it's strongly recommended given Zurich's tram tracks and cobbled streets. Speed limits in town are generally 50 km/h for motor traffic, with plenty of 30 km/h and 20 km/h zones where cycling feels especially relaxed. The general blood-alcohol limit for driving is 0.5 g/l, and while it targets motor vehicles, riding a bike after a few drinks is neither smart nor legal if you're clearly impaired.
