St. Gallen doesn't look like a cycling city at first glance — its old town is a maze of pedestrianized lanes wrapped around the Baroque cathedral of the Stiftsbezirk. But climb just a few minutes out of that historic core and the city opens up: the wooded paths above the Drei Weieren ponds, the wide blue horizon of Lake Constance from Rorschach, the postcard villages of Appenzell folded into the hills behind town. A bike gets you to all of it in an afternoon, at your own pace, without waiting on a bus timetable.
The reason a bike suits St. Gallen so well comes down to geography. The historic center is compact and mostly closed to cars, so walking covers it fine — but everything that makes the region special sits just outside that ring, on hilly ground where parking is scarce and hikes take half a day. A rental bike turns the Drei Weieren viewpoints, the Appenzell foothill villages, and the Lake Constance shoreline into easy half-day loops, and the signed Bodensee-Radweg gives you a flat, well-marked route east if you'd rather rack up distance than climb. If you want to rent a bike in St. Gallen, this is exactly the kind of city where it pays off.
For a normal bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h, you don't need a licence at all — anyone can rent and ride. Faster e-bikes assisted up to 45 km/h count legally as mopeds, so they require a moped licence and a yellow insurance plate; ask your rental company which category your e-bike falls into before you book. No international driving permit is needed for a standard bicycle rental. Expect a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, small for a city bike and higher for e-bikes.
A basic city bike runs from CHF 3–10 per day in low season up to CHF 15–35 per day in high summer, while e-bikes and higher-spec models run CHF 30–55 per day. Our own listings start around CHF 3 per day, near the very bottom of the market.
High season runs June to September, when the Drei Weieren fill up with swimmers and the lakeside paths are busiest — book a few days ahead if you want your pick of bikes. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop close to that CHF 3–10 per day floor but the hill villages and viewpoints are quieter and colder. May and early October sit comfortably in between, with good weather and thinner crowds.
Switzerland drives on the right, and that applies to bikes too — keep to the right on paths and roads. Helmets aren't legally required for a standard bicycle, though we'd always recommend one, but they're compulsory if you're riding a 45 km/h e-bike classed as a moped. In town, speed limits sit at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 or even 20 km/h in some residential zones, so you'll rarely be sharing the road with fast traffic. If you're mixing in a drink with your ride, note that Switzerland's general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, stricter still for novice drivers.
