San Juan rewards anyone willing to slow down. Roll out of the hotel on a bicycle and the city opens up in a way a taxi window never lets it: the colonial streets of Old San Juan under your wheels, then the coastal path out toward Condado Beach with the Atlantic on one side the whole way. This is a place built for two wheels, not four.
Old San Juan itself is compact, but its cobblestones and sudden hills make walking slow and driving a headache — there's nowhere to park and nothing to gain from a car. A bicycle covers the old streets easily and then keeps going, since the coastline from Condado through Ocean Park and Isla Verde to Piñones is largely flat and lined with dedicated paths. Few cities let you pair colonial architecture with a beach-hopping ride so naturally, which is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a bicycle in San Juan rather than rely on buses or cabs.
No licence is required to rent a regular bicycle, and there's no minimum age set by law — rental shops generally ask that younger riders be accompanied by an adult. If you go for an e-bike, most operators still won't ask for a licence, though a modest deposit or credit-card hold is standard practice, and a card in your own name is usually required. An IDP isn't needed for a bicycle rental.
Expect to pay around 15-20 USD per day in low season, rising to 25-35 USD per day in high season. Premium options such as e-bikes or higher-end cruisers run 35-50 USD per day.
Winter, roughly December to April, is high season, driven by cruise arrivals and travelers escaping colder climates — book ahead if you're visiting then, since rates and availability tighten up. September to November is quieter and cheaper, though it falls within hurricane season, so keep an eye on the forecast. If you can be flexible, April to June often gives you a good balance of good weather and lower prices.
Traffic in Puerto Rico moves on the right, same as the rest of the United States. Puerto Rico has no statewide bicycle helmet law for adults, though wearing one is always a good idea given the traffic around Condado and the old town. Speed limits in the city are generally low, around 25-35 mph on residential and urban streets, so cyclists share the road at manageable speeds. The legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.08%, and open containers of alcohol aren't allowed in vehicles — a good rule of thumb to keep in mind if you're combining a beach day with your ride.
