Old San Juan's streets weren't built with rental cars in mind, and once you've bumped a bumper against a 400-year-old curb on Calle del Cristo, you'll understand why. Swap the car for a quad, and suddenly the cobblestones, the colonial forts and the coast road out to El Yunque National Forest all open up. You can tuck into a parking spot the size of a scooter, catch the sea breeze on the ride out to Piñones, and still have the range to reach the rainforest waterfalls before lunch.
San Juan rewards exactly this kind of vehicle. The historic center is a maze of narrow one-way lanes where a full-size car feels oversized and a taxi is slow going nowhere; a quad slips through easily and parks almost anywhere. Outside the walls, the terrain flattens out along the coast, so the ride to Condado, Isla Verde or the kiosks of Piñones stays easy and open-air, with just enough hills near the shoreline to keep things interesting without ever feeling like real off-roading.
ATVs aren't street-legal in most of the US, so quad rentals in San Juan run on private land, guided trails or off-road areas rather than public roads. Most operators accept a standard driver's licence, no motorcycle endorsement needed, and there's no IDP requirement for renting. Expect a minimum age policy around 21, sometimes younger for guided tours where you ride as a passenger, and a credit-card deposit or hold in the renter's own name, with the amount set by each operator.
Average rental prices run from 35 to 45 USD per day in low season and 55 to 75 USD per day in high season, with premium models reaching 80 to 110 USD per day.
High season runs roughly December through April, so if you're planning a winter escape, book your quad well ahead to lock in a machine and a fair rate. September through November is low season — quieter, cheaper, and a good window if your travel dates are flexible and you don't mind the odd tropical shower.
Puerto Rico drives on the right, same as the rest of the US. Helmet rules for off-road ATV riding are set by each operator or trail area rather than a single state law, so check with whoever you rent from. On the wider road network, urban speed limits sit around 25–35 mph, rising to 55–65 mph on rural roads, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with zero tolerance under 21 — worth keeping in mind even off the main roads, since local enforcement doesn't relax just because you're on a quad.
