Protaras rewards anyone willing to move slowly enough to notice it. Swap the rental car for a bicycle and the coast road between Fig Tree Bay and Konnos Bay turns into a ride worth taking for its own sake — pine-backed cliffs, turquoise coves, and enough short detours to make you feel like you've found the place before anyone else did. Pedal a little further and Cape Greko opens up, with its cliff-top trails leading to the Love Bridge rock arch and the sea caves below it.
What makes a bike rental in Protaras genuinely useful, rather than just scenic, is the town's layout. Distances are short, the coast road is mostly flat with a few gentle climbs, and traffic is light compared to Ayia Napa or Larnaca. Cape Greko's headland even has proper dirt sections built for cycling, so a sturdy city or hybrid bike can handle the whole loop without trouble. Ayia Napa itself is only 6–8 km away, well within reach for an afternoon ride.
None of it is complicated. No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Cyprus, at any age, which makes this one of the simplest rentals you'll ever book. Some operators ask for a small deposit, usually a card hold, and a valid ID is normally enough — no international driving permit needed, since that only applies to motorised vehicles.
A basic city or beach bike runs 3-5 EUR per day in low season and 8-12 EUR per day in high season. If you'd rather cover more ground or tackle the Cape Greko dirt trails in comfort, an e-bike or mountain bike typically costs 15-25 EUR per day.
July and August are Protaras' busiest and most expensive months, with daytime heat that makes early morning or early evening rides far more comfortable than midday ones. For the best balance of price and weather, aim for April, May, September or October — warm, dry, and quieter on the roads. November through March is cheapest of all, and the coast stays rideable year-round; the only real limit is summer heat, not winter cold.
Cyprus drives on the left, so keep that in mind at junctions and roundabouts, which run clockwise with priority given to traffic already on them. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, but wearing one is simple good sense on coastal roads shared with cars and scooters. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town and 80 km/h on open roads, and the drink-drive limit for motorists sharing the road with you is 0.05%. Keep to the coastal path where you can, especially around Cape Greko, and you'll rarely need to think about traffic at all.
