Kamloops rewards anyone willing to cover ground on two wheels. Roll out from Riverside Park along the paved Rivers Trail and the South Thompson opens up beside you — flat, easy, and quiet enough that you'll forget you're minutes from downtown. Cross the Overlanders Bridge to North Kamloops, loop out to McArthur Island, or just keep pedalling until the valley walls take over the view.
This is a city built for a bike. The river valley keeps most of the useful riding flat and connected, so a short hop that's a slog on foot and pointless in a rental car turns into an easy ten minutes on the trail. And when you want more than flat river paths, the benches above town — Kenna Cartwright's grassland trails, the climb up to Sun Rivers — are close enough to reach without ever needing a car.
No licence is required to rent a standard bicycle in Canada, at any age. If you go for an e-bike, most provinces including British Columbia set a minimum rider age of 16 and cap assisted speed at 32 km/h, but still ask for no licence. An International Driving Permit is never needed for a bicycle rental. Expect a modest deposit or a hold on your ID rather than a large credit-card pre-authorisation.
A standard bike typically runs 25-35 CAD/day in the shoulder season, rising to roughly 40-60 CAD/day at the peak of summer. E-bikes and premium road or mountain bikes usually cost 60-100+ CAD/day.
Late spring through early autumn is the sweet spot for riding here, with April-May and September-October offering the best mix of good weather and low prices. Book ahead if you're arriving in July or August, when demand — and rates — both peak. Outside that window, from November to March, rental availability drops off sharply, so check ahead if you're travelling in the colder months.
Canada drives on the right. In British Columbia, bicycle helmets are mandatory for riders of all ages, so plan on wearing one throughout your ride. Posted speed limits in town are generally 50 km/h, dropping further near schools and playgrounds, which keeps traffic manageable for cyclists sharing the road. If you add an e-bike to the mix, the same helmet rule applies, and the criminal blood-alcohol limit for any road use in Canada is 0.08%, with much stricter roadside penalties kicking in from 0.05%.
