Cozumel rewards travellers who trade the rental-car line for two wheels and a bit of sea breeze. Pedal the San Miguel Malecón at golden hour and you will catch the sun dropping behind the channel toward Playa del Carmen, then keep going south past Chankanaab toward the reef-lined coast — no traffic jam, no parking hassle, just you and the water. This is an island built for slow discovery, and a bicycle lets you set the pace.
The reason it works so well here is geography. San Miguel's streets are flat and easy, and the paved Costera Sur running down the west coast is calm enough that you barely notice the cars. Cozumel is compact too — Punta Sur is roughly 25 km from town, a comfortable ride rather than an expedition — so a single day on a bike can string together several beaches and viewpoints that a cruise-ship schedule usually rules out. It also means skipping the paperwork that comes with a scooter or ATV: no licence check, no deposit hold, just grab a bike and go.
Nothing complicated. No licence and no International Driving Permit are required for a bicycle, and there is no minimum age beyond what feels safe for the rider. Some shops ask for a small deposit or a card hold rather than your passport — if a shop wants to keep your passport, you can usually offer cash or a card hold instead.
A basic cruiser or beach bike runs from around 55 to 90 MXN per day in low season, rising to roughly 120–200 MXN per day in high season. If you want a hybrid, electric-assist or better mountain bike, expect around 250–400 MXN per day.
High season runs December through April, when the island is driest, coolest and busiest — book a few days ahead if you're travelling over Christmas or spring break. Low season falls June through October, coinciding with the rainy and hurricane season; mornings are usually clear, so plan rides before the afternoon downpours. Prices track the calendar closely, so travelling in the shoulder months of May or October is the easiest way to combine good weather with lower rates.
Mexico drives on the right, and that applies on the Malecón and coastal road too. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, but they're worth wearing on the Costera Sur where scooters and cars share the lane. Speed limits in town sit around 30–60 km/h, so traffic moves slowly enough for cycling to feel safe, and drink-driving checkpoints are common in San Miguel — stick to water if you're planning to ride. Watch for unmarked topes (speed bumps) on the coastal road, and never trust a driver's turn signal as a real indication of intent on shared roads.
