Copenhagen rewards anyone willing to pedal. Glide along the harbor past the colorful facades of Nyhavn, follow the waterfront out to the Little Mermaid, and you will cover in an unhurried afternoon what would otherwise mean hours of walking or waiting on buses. This is a city that opens up when you're on two wheels — courtyards, canals and quiet squares reveal themselves the moment you leave the pavement behind.
Copenhagen is famously flat, compact, and built around one of the best cycle-track networks anywhere, so a bike genuinely outperforms a car or public transport here. The historic core, the beaches and the forests to the north are all within comfortable pedaling range, and the segregated bike lanes make riding low-stress even if you haven't been on a saddle in years. If you want to rent a bike in Copenhagen, this is about as easy and rewarding as city cycling gets.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Denmark, at any age. Rental shops will typically still ask for photo ID, and a deposit is common, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and bike model. No International Driving Permit is needed for a standard bicycle.
A standard city bike runs roughly 60-90 DKK per day in low season and 100-180 DKK per day in high season. Electric and cargo bikes cost more, typically 150-350 DKK per day year-round, with prices climbing toward the top of that range in summer.
High season runs June to August, when the city is busiest and prices are at their highest — book a few days ahead if you're arriving in peak summer. Low season, November to March, is cold and dark but cheapest, with bikes readily available on short notice. For the best balance of mild weather, long daylight and lower prices, May and September are hard to beat.
Denmark drives on the right, and cyclists are expected to use the cycle path wherever one exists, keep to the right, and signal turns by hand. A cycle helmet isn't legally required but is worth wearing regardless. Watch closely at junctions: the bike lane runs to the right of motor traffic, and cyclists riding straight ahead have priority over vehicles turning right across the lane. Keep your bike roadworthy too — working brakes, a bell, and lights front and rear after dark are routinely checked, and riding without lights after sundown is commonly fined.
