Copenhagen rewards anyone willing to cover a bit of ground. One afternoon you're weaving along the harbor past the colorful facades of Nyhavn, the next you're out on the coast road with the wind off the Sound, tracing the promenade toward the Little Mermaid. Renting a motorcycle in Copenhagen turns a city that can feel spread out into something you can string together in a single easy loop — harbor, palaces, beach, forest — without waiting on trains or paying for taxis.

The historic center is compact, but the sights that make a trip memorable sit further out: the beach and lagoon at Amager, the royal deer park north of town, the old amusement park tucked inside it. Walking gets you through the old streets, but it won't get you to the coast and back in an afternoon, and Copenhagen's bike lanes, while excellent, are built for commuting distances, not day-trip ones. A motorcycle or scooter closes that gap, letting you park close to the sights instead of hunting for a spot, and cover the in-between distances that make the city center and its outskirts feel connected rather than separate trips.

Top 10 things to see in Copenhagen by motorcycle

  1. Nyhavn — the iconic canal-front harbor lined with colorful houses, the classic first stop and photo point.
  2. The Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue) — Copenhagen's most famous statue, set along the Langelinie waterfront promenade.
  3. Amalienborg Palace — the royal residence, home to the changing of the guard, an easy ride along the harbor.
  4. Christiansborg Palace — seat of the Danish parliament on Slotsholmen, with canal views on every side.
  5. Tivoli Gardens — the historic amusement park right by Central Station, one of the city's defining sights.
  6. Freetown Christiania — the self-declared autonomous neighborhood, a detour unlike anywhere else in the city.
  7. Rundetaarn (Round Tower) — a 17th-century tower in the old city, climbed by a spiral ramp to a rooftop view.
  8. Kastellet — the star-shaped fortress park near the harbor, good for a scenic loop.
  9. Amager Strandpark — a man-made beach and lagoon south of the city, popular with locals on warm days.
  10. Bakken via Dyrehaven — the world's oldest amusement park, set inside a royal deer park north of town, best reached on a countryside ride out of the city.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Copenhagen?

Requirements depend on the vehicle class. A 45 km/h moped needs at least a moped licence (AM category) or a full driving licence; the slower 30 km/h class can be ridden from age 15. Anything over 50cc counts as a full motorcycle and needs a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A depending on the bike's power. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or higher, and will check your licence class against the machine you want. An International Driving Permit isn't required alongside an EU/EEA licence. Expect to leave a deposit, typically held on a credit card, with the amount varying by vehicle and operator.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Copenhagen?

Prices swing a lot with the season. A small scooter runs around 180–220 DKK per day in low season on a multi-day booking, while daily high-season rates for the same class climb to roughly 350–500 DKK. Larger or premium motorcycles, or short single-day bookings, can run 600–900+ DKK per day.

  • Cheapest months: November through February.
  • Dearest months: June, July and August, when demand and daily rates both peak.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Copenhagen?

High season runs June to August, when Copenhagen is at its busiest and prices are highest — book a few weeks ahead if you're arriving then. Low season, November to March, is far cheaper but also cold, dark and often wet, so fleets shrink and some operators outside the city scale back entirely. The sweet spot is May to September: milder weather, long daylight, and prices well below the summer peak in the shoulder months.

Local traffic rules in Copenhagen

Denmark drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory on mopeds, scooters and motorcycles. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though mopeds stay capped at their class speed regardless of the posted limit. Dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is strict at 0.05%, and enforcement is no joke. Keep an eye out for cyclists too — Copenhagen's bike lanes run right alongside motor traffic, and cyclists going straight have priority over vehicles turning across the lane.
