Bern rewards anyone willing to explore it slowly, and a bicycle is the best way to do that. Ride down through the arcades from the Zytglogge clock tower, cross the river to the BärenPark, then climb to the Rosengarten for the view every postcard of the city is built on — sandstone rooftops curling inside the Aare's bend, with the Alps sitting on the horizon behind them. On a warm afternoon you can drop your bike at Marzili and float down the river with the locals before pedalling back up for dinner. That's the kind of day a bike buys you here.
Bern's Old Town sits on a narrow peninsula almost entirely closed to cars, so walking it end to end eats up more time than it should, while buses only skim the surface. A bike closes that gap. The riding itself is easy river-valley terrain with just a couple of short climbs, at the Rosengarten and up to Gurten, well within reach of any standard city bike, and the city's bike lane network is dense enough that you're rarely fighting traffic. It's one of the most relaxed Swiss cities to cover on two wheels.
No licence is needed for a normal bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h — anyone can turn up and ride. Faster e-bikes, assisted up to 45 km/h, count as mopeds under Swiss law and require a moped licence and yellow insurance plate, so check which type you're booking. An International Driving Permit isn't required for ordinary bicycle hire. Rental companies typically hold a modest deposit on your card, well below what's asked for motorised vehicles, and there's no strict minimum age for a standard city bike beyond being able to ride one safely.
On BikesBooking.com you'll find listings from 3 CHF per day at the low end, with standard city bikes generally running 15-20 CHF per day in low season and 25-35 CHF per day in high season. E-bikes cost more, typically 40-60 CHF per day given the extra battery and motor.
High season runs June to September, when the riverside lawns fill up and demand for a bike rental in Bern peaks along with prices. Low season stretches from November to March, when rates drop and the Old Town is far quieter, though shorter days and colder weather make it less appealing for long rides. May and early October sit in between — good weather, thinner crowds, and prices closer to the low-season end. If you're set on a summer visit, book ahead; if flexibility works for you, shoulder season is where the best value is.
Switzerland drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too — keep to the marked lanes and give way as signed at junctions. Helmets aren't legally required for riders on a standard bicycle, though we'd always recommend wearing one; they are compulsory for anyone on a fast 45 km/h e-bike. In town, speed limits typically sit at 50 km/h for motor traffic, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h in residential zones, so cyclists share calm streets for much of the ride. Switzerland also enforces a strict 0.5 g/l blood-alcohol limit for anyone behind a motorised set of wheels, so if you're switching between a bike and a scooter during your stay, keep that in mind.
