Basel rewards a rider willing to explore beyond the postcard shot. Start at Basel Münster, where the red-sandstone towers look out over the Rhine from the Pfalz terrace, then let the river pull you along the Rheinuferweg promenade into Kleinbasel, past bathers who treat the current as their own lazy river every summer afternoon. Cross the Mittlere Brücke when the light turns gold and you will understand why this crossing has anchored the city for eight centuries. A bicycle here isn't a compromise — it's simply the fastest way to feel the place.
The city itself makes the case for you. Basel is flat, compact, and threaded with well-marked bike lanes, so pedalling between the old town, the riverside quarters and even the Riehen suburb rarely takes more than a few minutes. Distances between the sights that matter — two to six kilometres, most of them — are short enough that a standard city bike covers a full day of sightseeing without breaking a sweat, and without the wait for a tram or the hassle of parking a car.
No licence is required for a normal bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h — only the faster 45 km/h e-bikes count as mopeds and need a moped licence and yellow insurance plate. You won't need an International Driving Permit for an ordinary bike rental. Most operators ask for a valid ID and take a modest deposit, usually held on a credit card, and there's no strict minimum age beyond being old enough to ride safely.
Expect roughly 15-20 CHF per day in low season and 25-35 CHF per day in high season for a standard city bike; e-bikes and premium or hybrid models run 40-60 CHF per day.
High season runs June to September, when the Rhine promenades are busiest and prices sit at their yearly high. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates and a quieter old town to yourself. If you're planning a summer trip, book a little ahead; outside those months you can usually find a bike on short notice.
Switzerland drives on the right, and helmets aren't legally required for riders on ordinary bicycles — though we'd always recommend one — while riders of the faster 45 km/h e-bikes must wear one by law. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h limit for motor traffic, with many central streets slowed further to 30 km/h or 20 km/h zones, so cycling here feels unhurried and safe. The general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, stricter still for novice drivers, so keep that in mind if you're combining a ride with an evening out.
