Baden feels made for two wheels. The old town is a tangle of car-restricted lanes wrapped around the Limmat, and the river itself hands you a ready-made route: a flat, easy promenade linking the medieval core to the old spa quarter, the Bäderquartier, where thermal baths have drawn visitors for centuries. Coast along it in the morning, then let the path pull you further out toward Wettingen, past orchards and quiet stretches of water, with barely a hill in sight until you choose one.
That's really the appeal of getting around Baden on a bike — the town itself is small and largely pedestrian, so cycling is often faster than driving and far more pleasant than waiting for a bus that only needs to go a few hundred metres. The Limmat corridor keeps things flat and beginner-friendly, while a scattering of short, steep climbs up to the old castle ruin or the Lägern ridge give stronger riders a reason to work for a view. Few other towns pack this much variety into such a compact area.
An ordinary bicycle needs no licence at all, and neither does a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h — both are open to riders of pretty much any age. Only the faster 45 km/h e-bikes count as mopeds under Swiss law and require a moped licence plus a yellow insurance plate, so double-check which category you're booking. No International Driving Permit is required for a standard bicycle rental. You'll usually be asked for a deposit, held on a credit card, though for a regular bike it tends to be modest compared with motorised rentals.
Expect around CHF 12-15 per day in low season, rising to roughly CHF 25-35 per day in high season, with e-bikes or premium hybrid models running CHF 40-60 per day.
High season runs June through September, when long daylight hours and warm weather make the Limmat paths and the climb up to Ruine Stein most appealing — and when prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads, thinner crowds and the cheapest daily rates of the year. If you're flexible, shoulder months like May or late September often strike the best balance between good weather and lighter demand.
Switzerland drives on the right, and while helmets aren't legally required for ordinary cyclists, they're strongly recommended — riders of the faster 45 km/h e-bikes must wear one by law. Built-up areas like central Baden are capped at 50 km/h for motor traffic, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h in some old-town zones, so you'll rarely be sharing the road with anything moving fast. The general blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, with a near-zero threshold for novice drivers. Bicycles are banned from motorways and expressways, which suits Baden fine — the best riding here has always been along the river, not the highway.
