Reykjavik rewards anyone willing to cover ground beyond the harbor front, and a scooter is the easiest way to do it. Glide past the black spire of Hallgrímskirkja, swing down to the waterfront to see the Sun Voyager catch the light, then keep going along the coast toward Grótta — all without waiting on a bus timetable or hunting for a parking spot. On a clear evening you can chase the sunset out to the lighthouse and still be back downtown in time for dinner.

The city center is small, flat and easy to read, which makes it ideal territory for two wheels. Reykjavik's bus network doesn't run often enough to suit a traveller on a tight schedule, so a scooter fills the gap neatly, letting you string together the compact downtown grid and the longer coastal loop — harbor, Grótta, Nauthólsvík — in one unhurried ride, weather allowing.

Top 10 things to see in Reykjavik by scooter

  1. Hallgrímskirkja — Iceland's tallest church and the city's central landmark, with a viewing tower and a quick ride from almost anywhere downtown.
  2. Sólfar (Sun Voyager) — a steel Viking-ship sculpture on the waterfront promenade, an easy coastal cruise from the center.
  3. Harpa Concert Hall — the glass-fronted concert hall on the same scenic seafront stretch as the Sun Voyager.
  4. Reykjavík Old Harbour — a working harbor lined with seafood shacks and whale-watching boats, a natural spot to pause and turn back.
  5. Perlan — a glass-domed museum and observation deck atop Öskjuhlíð hill, worth the short climb for the 360° view.
  6. Tjörnin — the city pond ringed by a footpath and City Hall, a calm, flat loop right in the heart of downtown.
  7. Laugavegur — the main shopping and nightlife street, good for weaving between cafes, shops and street art.
  8. Grótta Island Lighthouse — a tidal-island lighthouse out on the Seltjarnarnes point, a favorite for sunset and northern-lights rides.
  9. Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach — a man-made geothermal beach and lagoon near the old domestic airport, a relaxed coastal detour south of downtown.
  10. Laugardalur — the city's largest park, with a botanical garden, thermal pool and zoo, a leafy break from the harbor route.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Reykjavik?

Scooter rental is a fairly niche market in Iceland, and operators generally ask for a moped-category licence, or in some cases a standard car licence, depending on the engine size and the rental company's own policy. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Riders are expected to be legal adults, and a deposit or credit-card hold is standard practice, with the amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Reykjavik?

Prices run roughly 2,000–2,500 ISK per day in low season, climbing to about 4,000–6,500 ISK per day in high season, with larger or faster models running closer to 6,000–9,000 ISK per day.

  • June through August, the season of midnight sun, is the most expensive stretch to book a rental.
  • November to February, outside the Christmas and New Year rush, is when prices drop closest to our own scooter rental in Reykjavik listings from around €15 a day.

When to book a rental scooter in Reykjavik?

High season runs June to August, when demand and prices both peak, so booking a few weeks ahead is a good idea if you want your pick of models. Low season stretches from November to March, when quieter roads and thinner crowds bring the daily rate down — though winter weather makes riding far less practical than the June-to-early-September window most riders prefer.

Local traffic rules in Reykjavik

Iceland drives on the right, and motor vehicles must run with headlights on at all times, day and night, all year round. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural gravel roads and 90 km/h on rural paved roads. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle or moped, and drink-driving rules are enforced with near-zero tolerance, so plan to ride sober.
