Picture leaving the last roundabout of Reykjavik behind and, twenty minutes later, standing in a lava field that looks like the surface of another planet. That's the pitch for a quad-bike trip here: within a short drive you swap city pavement for black rock, geothermal steam and open coastline. A loop through the Reykjanes Peninsula's lava flows, or a run past Kleifarvatn with its black sand shore, is the kind of thing you simply can't do from behind a car window.
Reykjavik itself is compact and easy to explore on foot, but the real draw sits just outside the city limits — sparsely trafficked highland tracks, gravel roads and volcanic terrain that a regular car or a scooter can't handle. A quad's traction on loose lava rock and black sand turns rough ground into fun rather than an obstacle, and because the riding areas around the Golden Circle and Reykjanes are so close to the capital, you can be out on the trail and back in time for dinner. If you want to rent a quad bike in Reykjavik, this is exactly the kind of terrain it was built for.
In Iceland, off-road driving on your own is illegal, so quad riding is sold almost exclusively as a guided tour rather than a self-drive rental. You'll normally need a valid car driving licence, and the operator sets its own minimum age for riders. No International Driving Permit is required if your home licence is in the Latin alphabet. Operators typically take a deposit or a credit-card hold before you head out, with the amount varying by company.
Prices are usually quoted per person for a guided tour rather than a flat rental fee, and they shift noticeably with the season.
June to August is high season — long daylight hours and the best trail access, but also the highest prices and the months to book ahead. November to February is low season: short days and snow or ice limit which trails are open, so prices drop but availability does too. For the best balance of good ground conditions and reasonable rates, aim for June through early September.
Iceland drives on the right, and headlights must stay on around the clock, year-round, for every motor vehicle. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural gravel roads and 90 km/h on paved rural roads. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorised two- or four-wheeler. Drink-driving carries near-zero tolerance, with an immediate licence loss for anyone caught over the limit — so plan to ride, not drink, on tour days.
