Cusco is a city best explored from above the rooftops, and there is no better way to earn that view than on a quad-bike. Rev out of San Blas and up the dirt track toward Sacsayhuamán, where the fortress walls rise higher than a bus, then keep climbing to Tambomachay and its Inca water channels still running after five centuries. Further out, the road drops into the Sacred Valley toward the Maras salt pans, thousands of terraced pools glinting in the afternoon sun — a route few taxis will attempt and no walking tour reaches in a single day.
Cusco sits at over 3,400 metres, and its best sights are scattered across rough, unpaved tracks that climb ridgelines and cross open plateau — terrain cars struggle with and taxis simply won't take on. A quad-bike handles the altitude gain, the loose gravel and the long distances between ruins with ease, letting you string together several sites in one morning instead of booking a different tour for each.
For road use, a motorcycle-class licence is required, and an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended alongside your home licence. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, commonly 21 and sometimes 25 for the larger machines, regardless of the legal driving minimum of 18. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a hold on your credit card, and to have your passport or ID copied at pickup.
Average rental prices run from around 55–60 PEN per day in low season up to 90–110 PEN per day in high season, with premium 250cc-plus models reaching 130–160 PEN per day at tourist hubs in Cusco and the Sacred Valley.
June through August is high season — dry roads, clear ridge views, and the busiest booking window, so reserve ahead if you want a specific model. November to March is low season, cheaper and quieter, though rain can occasionally affect the mountain routes. May and September sit nicely in between, with good riding conditions and lighter demand.
Peru drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders, and speed limits are generally around 40 km/h on urban streets, rising to 60 km/h on main avenues — take it slower on the unpaved ridge tracks regardless of the posted limit. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05%, strictly enforced at roadside checkpoints, so save the pisco sour for after you've parked.
