Astana rewards anyone willing to cover ground. The left bank was built on a scale meant for wide boulevards and sweeping views, not short strolls, and a quad puts you in charge of that scale. Ride out from Baiterek Tower, cut across the open plazas near Khan Shatyr, and you will cover in an hour what would otherwise eat your whole afternoon on foot.

This is a spread-out capital: the government quarter, the Expo park, the riverside districts and the entertainment complexes on the right bank all sit some distance apart, with wide embankments and steppe-edge tracks connecting them that a car simply cannot use. Once you are outside the city, that same flat, open steppe becomes the natural launchpad for a longer off-road run — which is exactly where a quad earns its keep, in a way walking, buses or a rental sedan never could.

Top 10 things to see in Astana by quad-bike

  1. Baiterek Tower — the city's central landmark on Nurzhol Boulevard, and a natural starting or finishing point for any ride through the capital.
  2. Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center — Foster's giant tent-shaped complex, one of the most recognizable stops on a loop through the left bank.
  3. Nurzhol Boulevard — the wide ceremonial avenue linking Baiterek to the Ak Orda presidential palace, an obvious axis for a sightseeing route.
  4. Ishim (Esil) River embankment — paved riverside paths on both banks make for an easy, scenic stretch between the government quarter and the residential districts.
  5. Hazret Sultan Mosque — Central Asia's largest mosque, a short ride from Baiterek and worth a stop for the architecture alone.
  6. Duman Entertainment Center — an oceanarium and family entertainment complex on the right bank, a popular destination away from the government quarter.
  7. Nur Alem (EXPO 2017 museum sphere) — the giant glass sphere anchors the Expo park, a distinct area worth riding out to on its own.
  8. Astana Botanic Garden / Presidential Park riverside area — green parkland along the river, a change of pace from all the boulevard architecture.
  9. Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve — a steppe and lake reserve south of the city, a favourite longer route out of Astana; check with your rental shop on distance limits first.
  10. Burabay (Borovoe) National Park — Kazakhstan's best-known lake-and-forest getaway, often the target for longer excursions; confirm with the operator whether your rental covers the distance.

What do you need to rent a quad-bike in Astana?

Rental firms will ask for a valid driving licence, and road-legal quads generally fall under a light-vehicle entitlement, while genuine off-road ATVs are usually rented only for guided off-road use. Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. The minimum age is 18, though most operators set the bar higher, often 21 and up, sometimes with a year or two of driving experience required. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or as a card hold, along with your passport details for identification — keep the physical passport with you, since you will need to show ID if stopped by police.

How much does it cost to rent a quad-bike in Astana?

A standard single-rider quad runs roughly 8,000–12,000 KZT per day in low season, climbing to 15,000–25,000 KZT per day once high season arrives. If you want more power or a two-seat 4x4 model, budget 30,000–45,000 KZT per day.

  • Prices peak in June–August, with short spikes around Nauryz in March and the New Year holidays.
  • The cheapest window is November through February, aside from the New Year period itself.

When to book a rental quad-bike in Astana?

High season runs June to August, when the steppe is warm, daylight is long and prices sit at their highest — book a few days ahead if you want your pick of vehicles. Low season stretches from November to March, when Astana's continental winter regularly drops well below -20°C and most two-wheeler and quad rentals scale right back, so this is not the season for a steppe excursion. May, June and September into early October are the sweet spot: mild weather, steady availability and prices that have not yet hit their summer peak.

Local traffic rules in Astana

Kazakhstan drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any motorised quad or scooter. Speed limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on rural roads and 100–110 km/h on main highways, with automatic speed cameras common enough that it pays to stay within them. Alcohol tolerance is zero — no measurable blood alcohol is allowed behind the handlebars, and penalties are steep. Keep headlights on outside built-up areas, use your phone hands-free only, and be ready to stop and show your licence, IDP and vehicle documents at the traffic police checkpoints you will find on routes leading out of the city.
