Astana rewards riders who like their cities big and their skylines strange. Swing a motorcycle down Nurzhol Boulevard at golden hour and the gold-glass towers, the Ak Orda residence, and Bayterek Tower line up like a movie set built for two wheels. Head south and the glass sphere of Nur Alem catches the light before you drop onto the Ishim River embankment for a slower, scenic run home.
Astana was planned on a grid, and that makes it a motorcycle city more than a walking one. The government and cultural core, the EXPO district, and the riverside are strung out over distances that punish pedestrians and outpace buses, while the wide, straight arterials let a bike close those gaps in minutes. The flat steppe terrain around the capital also means you can point the bike north and just keep going — Astana is the natural starting line for a long ride out to Burabay National Park.
You'll need a motorcycle licence in the Vienna Convention's category A family, with a lighter sub-category covering small-capacity machines — bring your home licence along with an International Driving Permit. The general minimum age is 18, though most rental companies here set the bar at 21 or higher and may ask for a year or two of riding experience. Expect to leave a deposit, usually cash or a card hold plus your passport details for the record — keep the physical passport with you, since police can ask to see it.
Budget around 12,000–14,000 KZT per day in low season, rising to roughly 18,000–25,000 KZT per day in high season, with larger-displacement or premium touring bikes running 25,000 KZT and up.
High season runs June to August, with the best all-round riding weather in May, June, September and early October — book a couple of weeks ahead if you're planning a Burabay trip in peak summer. Low season stretches from November to March, when Astana's continental winter regularly drops below -20°C and prices — along with available bikes — fall with the temperature.
Kazakhstan drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on any motorcycle or scooter. Speed limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, and up to 110 km/h on main highways, with speed cameras common along the routes out of the city. Alcohol tolerance is zero for drivers, and motorcycles should run with headlights on at all times, even outside town.
Astana's rental shops know these roads well and will send you off with a solid bike, a helmet, and clear instructions. If you're ready to rent a motorcycle in Astana, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
