Buenos Aires has its tango, Patagonia has its glaciers — but Mendoza's real spectacle is the road itself. Point a motorcycle west out of the city and within an hour you're climbing toward the peaks around Puente del Inca, with Aconcagua's summit rising over the valley. Head south instead and the pavement threads through the red rock of the Cañón del Atuel, curve after curve above the river. This is a province built for two wheels, and if you want to feel it properly, you'll want to rent a motorcycle in Mendoza rather than watch it go by from a bus window.
The city itself is easy going — wide, tree-lined avenues and manageable traffic — but its charm is really a launchpad. The mountains start close, wine country closer still, and a motorcycle lets you stop wherever a switchback or a vineyard view demands it. A mid-size bike handles the hairpins on the Andean passes far better than a car, and it slips into the small towns along the way — Uspallata, Potrerillos, Cacheuta — without needing to hunt for parking.
Argentina doesn't offer a moped exemption, so even a small scooter requires a motorcycle licence. To rent a motorcycle in Mendoza, you'll need a valid motorcycle licence from your home country, ideally paired with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and your passport. Rental companies generally expect the licence to match the bike's displacement, and larger touring bikes are usually reserved for riders who can show some road experience. Minimum age is typically in the low twenties, and a credit-card deposit is standard practice.
A standard, mid-size motorcycle runs roughly 25,000–30,000 ARS per day in low season, rising to about 35,000–45,000 ARS per day in high season. Large-displacement or adventure bikes, better suited to the longer Andean routes, can run 50,000–70,000+ ARS per day.
December through February is high season — warm days, open passes, and the busiest (and priciest) window for a motorcycle rental in Mendoza. If you'd rather ride the Alta Montaña route in comfort with fewer crowds, spring and autumn shoulder months are a good compromise. Winter (May–August) brings the lowest prices, but some of the higher passes, including the road toward Cristo Redentor, can close with snow, so check conditions before booking if that route is the goal. Either way, booking a few weeks ahead in summer is wise, since the best bikes go first.
Argentina drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers alike — police enforcement is routine, so keep yours on even for short hops. Low-beam headlights should stay on at all times outside the city, day or night. Speed limits run around 40 km/h on city streets, 60 km/h on urban avenues, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though signage and roadworks often override these. The safest rule on alcohol is simple: don't drink before you ride — several provinces enforce zero tolerance for motorcyclists, and the national limit for riders is stricter than for car drivers. Keep your rental agreement and insurance papers with you, since roadside checks are common on the routes into the mountains.
