Downtown Mendoza rewards anyone willing to move slowly through it, and a bicycle is the best speed for that. Ride under the acequia-fed plane trees toward Parque General San Martín, loop the lake at the Rosedal past rows of roses and rowers, then climb the switchbacks of Cerro de la Gloria for a view that stretches from the city rooftops to the Andes. Head out the other direction and you're pedalling between vineyards on the Maipú wine route within the hour — a very different kind of ride, but just as easy to reach on two wheels.
Mendoza was practically built for cycling. The colonial grid downtown is flat, wide and shaded, so the summer heat that makes walking miserable barely touches you on a bike, and traffic moves at a calmer pace than in Buenos Aires or Córdoba. Distances here are the other argument: the plazas, the park and the Maipú bodegas sit 2 to 15 kilometres apart, too far for a comfortable walk but a quick, scenic ride once you're on a saddle.
Argentina sets no licence, registration or minimum age for bicycles, so renting is straightforward — no IDP needed. Rental shops usually just ask for an ID document, and some may hold a small deposit against the bike. If you're planning to rent a scooter or motorcycle instead for a longer trip, that's a different story: those do require a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit.
A standard city or mountain bike runs roughly ARS 7,000–9,000 per day in low season and ARS 12,000–16,000 in high season. E-bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes cost more, typically ARS 20,000–28,000 per day.
Book ahead if you're coming in high season — December through February, or early March for the Vendimia festival — when demand and prices both climb. For lower prices and thinner crowds around the plazas and the park, aim for June to August; the flat terrain and mild winters here mean the low season is still perfectly rideable.
Argentina drives on the right. National traffic law expects cyclists to wear a helmet too, though enforcement of that rule is looser than for motorised vehicles — wearing one anyway is the sensible choice, especially around the busier avenues. Urban speed limits sit around 40 km/h on streets and 60 km/h on avenues, so cars generally aren't moving fast, but junctions in the centre can still get busy. Argentina's alcohol limits are strict, and several provinces apply zero tolerance, so the simplest approach if you plan to ride is not to drink beforehand at all.
