Traffic in downtown Asunción moves in fits and starts, but on two wheels you slip past all of it. Ride along the Costanera de Asunción as the sun drops behind the Bahía, then cut back into the old town to park right outside the Palacio de los López, lit up gold against the river. That is the appeal of a motorcycle here: you set the pace, and the city opens up accordingly.

Asunción's historic center is dense and narrow, built for a slower era, so a motorcycle threads through it and parks within steps of almost anything you want to see. Once you're past downtown, the paved national routes running out toward Ruta 2 and Ruta 1 are flat and fast, turning lakeside towns like Areguá and San Bernardino into easy half-day escapes that would cost far more time and money by car.

Top 10 things to see in Asunción by motorcycle

  1. Costanera de Asunción — a long riverside boulevard along the Bahía de Asunción, perfect for an easy warm-up ride with skyline and sunset views over the Paraguay River.
  2. Palacio de los López — the presidential palace on the waterfront, beautifully lit at night and a classic photo stop in the historic center.
  3. Panteón Nacional de los Héroes — the domed mausoleum landmark of the old town, an obvious stop on any downtown loop.
  4. Cementerio de la Recoleta — a historic cemetery with elaborate mausoleums, worth a slow ride-by for its architecture and history.
  5. Jardín Botánico y Zoológico de Asunción — a large green park at the city's edge, with quiet tree-lined roads that feel a world away from downtown traffic.
  6. Cerro Lambaré — a hill just south of the city topped with a monument, giving a panoramic view over Asunción and the river.
  7. Areguá — a lakeside town on Ypacaraí around 30 km out, known for its hills, pottery workshops and lake views — a favorite weekend ride.
  8. San Bernardino — the road out to this resort town on Lake Ypacaraí is one of the best longer rides, ending at beaches and waterfront restaurants.
  9. Itauguá — an easy day-trip stop on Ruta 2, famous for handmade ñandutí lace.
  10. Yaguarón — further out on Ruta 1, home to a striking 18th-century Franciscan church, a good target for a longer countryside ride.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Asunción?

You'll need a valid motorcycle licence from your home country, and it's worth carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it, since one is generally expected for visitors. Most rental companies set the minimum age at 18, though some set it higher. Expect to leave a deposit, either as cash or a card hold, along with your passport or ID details.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Asunción?

Average rental prices run around 200,000 PYG per day in low season, rising to roughly 250,000–320,000 PYG per day in high season. If you'd rather ride something larger or newer for a longer touring trip, expect closer to 350,000–450,000 PYG per day for a premium model.

  • Prices climb during December–February, when Paraguayan summer, holidays and Carnival bring the most visitors.
  • Prices ease off from May to August, the cooler, drier off-peak months.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Asunción?

High season runs December through February, plus a smaller bump in July during winter school break — book ahead if you're travelling then, since demand and prices both rise. Low season falls in March–May and September–November, when rates are gentler and availability is easier to come by. If you can, April to June and late August to October give you the mildest riding weather at the best prices.

Local traffic rules in Asunción

Paraguay drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger under national traffic law, and police checkpoints routinely check for them along with your documents and plate. Speed limits are low in built-up areas and higher on the paved national routes, so watch the posted signs. Treat drink-driving as zero tolerance, and switch your headlight on at dusk and in rain — rural roads are unlit and shared with pedestrians, cattle and horse carts, and cobbled or red-earth side streets get slippery fast once it rains.
