Asunción moves at a pace made for two wheels. Glide along the Costanera de Asunción at sunrise, with the Bahía de Asunción spreading out beside you and herons picking through the wetlands, and you will understand why so many travellers skip the taxi altogether. Pedal a little further and the riverside brings you straight to the Palacio de los López, its white columns catching the morning light — no traffic jam, no waiting for a bus that never quite comes.
The reason this city works so well on a bike is simple geography. The historic centre and the Costanera are flat, compact, and increasingly threaded with dedicated bike lanes, so a bicycle beats a taxi for hopping between the riverfront, the old town and the nearby parks. Most of the sights sit two to six kilometres apart — an easy, satisfying ride rather than a slog — and with the heat and humidity that build up by midday, an early-morning or late-afternoon ride is far more comfortable than covering the same ground on foot.
No licence or registration is needed to rent a bicycle here — it is one of the simplest rentals you will make on your trip. Rental operators usually ask for a minimum age of 18, though some are flexible for younger riders travelling with an adult. A deposit is common, taken as cash or a card hold, along with your passport or ID details. No International Driving Permit is required for a bicycle.
Average rental prices run from 20,000 to 28,000 PYG per day in low season, rising to 35,000–55,000 PYG per day in high season. If you want an electric bike or a higher-spec mountain or road model, expect 60,000–90,000 PYG per day.
High season runs December to February and again in July, when demand — and prices — are at their peak. Low season falls in March–May and September–November, when you will find both better availability and lower daily rates. If you are travelling in July or over the New Year, book a few days ahead; outside those windows, you can usually arrange a bike rental in Asunción on short notice.
Paraguay drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Motorcycles are everywhere on Asunción's streets, so ride defensively and expect overtaking on both sides even in slow traffic. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists the way they are for motorcycle riders, but wearing one is a sensible habit given how busy the roads get. Speed limits are low in the built-up centre, so bikes keep pace comfortably with city traffic. If you're out at dusk or in rain, make yourself visible — and remember that Paraguay treats drink-driving with essentially zero tolerance, a good rule to carry over to cycling as well.
