Is cycling even possible in Mumbai’s traffic?

Yes — but not everywhere. The city’s density makes blanket advice useless. Instead, focus on where it works: the Marine Drive promenade at dawn, the low-traffic lanes of Colaba Causeway before 9 AM, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) internal roads, and the newly expanded cycle tracks along Juhu Beach. Bicycles thrive in zones where cars are slow, parking is scarce, and distances are short — exactly the gaps Mumbai’s transport system leaves open.

What do you need to rent a bicycle in Mumbai?

You don’t need any driver’s licence to rent a bicycle; some deposit may be required for a bike (by cash or card) which will be returned at the end.

Which bike type suits Mumbai?

Hybrid and city bikes dominate fleets — upright handlebars, 28" wheels, medium tires — ideal for smooth promenades and light gravel. Mountain bikes (MTB) are recommended for the Sanjay Gandhi National Park periphery or Aarey Milk Colony trails. Electric bicycles are increasingly available for the 6 km climb from Lower Parel to Mahalaxmi — a route that tests even fit riders in humidity.

What brands and extras are offered?

On our website you can hire bikes from Trek, Giant, Specialized, Cube, Merida, Scott, and BSA. Helmets are provided on request; lights and locks are standard. Optional extras include: GPS navigation (with Mumbai-specific safe-route mapping), rear rack, basket, gloves, speedometer, full insurance, one-way rental (e.g., Colaba to Nariman Point), and delivery to hotel, CST station, or Mumbai Airport.

Ten places where a bicycle outperforms every other transport

  1. Marine Drive loop (5.5 km) – Best 5:30–7:30 AM, no traffic, sea views
  2. Colaba Causeway → Gateway of India → Elephanta ferry point – Pedestrian-heavy, cars crawl
  3. Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) internal network – Wide, low-traffic, modern infrastructure
  4. Juhu Beach promenade (north to ISKCON) – Dedicated path, sunset rides
  5. Hanging Gardens → Malabar Hill loop – Quiet, elevated, panoramic
  6. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) periphery – Museum district, minimal parking
  7. Worli Sea Face connector road – Coastal, breezy, avoids Marine Drive congestion
  8. Powai Lake circuit – Suburban calm, flat, safe for families
  9. Sanjay Gandhi National Park buffer trail (Borivali side) – Gravel, wildlife sightings
  10. Dharavi outer lanes (guided tours only) – Ethical access, community-run initiatives

Most of our bike rental companies in Mumbai have many years of experience and will provide you with a well-maintained bicycle, helmet, lock, and route suggestions. The number of verified companies grows every day — just use the search form on the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
