Brussels rewards anyone willing to get off the tram. Pedal from the cobblestones of the Grand-Place down to the Brussels-Charleroi Canal, and within twenty minutes you can be gliding along a flat, car-free towpath with barely another soul in sight. Loop through Parc du Cinquantenaire under its triumphal arch, or keep going until the city thins out into the beech trees of the Fôret de Soignes. That's the real appeal of a **bike rental in Brussels**: the city stays compact enough to cover on two wheels, but generous enough with green space that you're never far from somewhere quiet.
The historic center is flat, dense with one-way streets, and increasingly laced with dedicated cycle lanes, so a bicycle often beats a car or even the metro for short hops between neighborhoods. Traffic in the center can be slow and unpredictable, while a bike slips through it and opens up canal paths, park loops and forest trails that public transport simply doesn't reach.
No licence is required to rent a regular bicycle, whatever your age. E-bikes capped at 25 km/h with pedal assist count as ordinary bicycles too, so the same rule applies. A deposit is usually held on your credit card, and bringing a passport or ID is standard practice. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle rental — that only comes into play for scooters and motorcycles.
Expect to pay 3 to 12 EUR per day during low season, and 15 to 25 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes run higher, from 25 to 40 EUR per day.
June to August is high season, when demand and prices both peak, so booking ahead is worth it if you're set on specific dates. November to February is low season, with quieter streets and the lowest prices, though the weather asks more of you. May, June and September tend to offer the best balance — mild days, long light, and rates that haven't hit their summer high yet.
Belgium drives on the right, and Brussels itself is a 30 km/h zone across most streets in the center, so cycling pace rarely feels out of step with traffic. Bicycle helmets aren't a legal requirement, though many riders wear one out of habit. Watch for "priority to the right" at unmarked junctions — traffic joining from your right technically has the right of way, which catches plenty of visitors off guard. Cyclists are well protected under Belgian law, and drivers are required to give way when turning across a cycle lane. Rain is possible in any month, so it's worth keeping a light waterproof layer with you regardless of the season.
