Beijing rewards travelers who slow down enough to notice it — and a bicycle is still the best way to do that. Pedal the wide avenues around Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City before locking up to explore on foot, then drift over to Houhai Lake as the sun goes down and the bars along the water start to fill. Between the two you'll pass through hutong lanes that no bus route touches and no metro line reaches.
Few capitals were built with cyclists in mind the way Beijing was. The old city sits flat and gridded, with broad avenues linking its major sights and a dense web of dedicated bike lanes running alongside them. Traffic can be heavy, but the cycling infrastructure is genuinely extensive, and a bike gets you into hutong alleys and park loops that a car simply can't enter. If you want to rent a bicycle in Beijing, this is a city built to reward you for it.
For a standard city bike, no licence is required, though riders should be at least 12 years old. If you'd rather rent an electric bike, the minimum age rises to 16, and in many cities compliant e-bikes must be registered and carry a plate — our partners will handle this for you. No IDP is needed for a bicycle. A deposit is usually collected in cash or as a card hold, along with your passport details, with the amount set by the individual rental operator.
A basic city bike runs around 20-25 CNY per day in low season, rising to roughly 40-60 CNY per day during high season. If you want an e-bike or a premium model, expect 80-150 CNY per day.
High season runs April to May and again in September to October, when mild weather and clear skies bring the biggest crowds — and the highest prices. Booking a few days ahead is wise if your trip falls in one of these windows, especially around the Golden Week holiday in early October. Low season stretches from December through February; it's colder, but rates drop and the sights are far quieter.
China drives on the right, and this applies to cyclists too — keep to the marked bike lanes wherever they exist. Helmets aren't strictly mandatory for standard bicycles, but under the nationwide "One Helmet, One Belt" rules they're increasingly expected for e-bike riders in most cities, so it's worth wearing one regardless. Speed limits on ordinary city streets typically sit between 30 and 60 km/h for motor traffic, though as a cyclist you'll naturally move well under that. Alcohol limits for motor vehicles are effectively zero tolerance in China, and it's sensible to apply the same rule to yourself on a bike after a day of sightseeing.
