Bicycle Hire Bali – Exploring the Island

Bali is more than its postcard beaches — it’s a mosaic of rice terraces cascading down volcanic slopes, ancient temples hidden in jungle clearings, quiet fishing villages where the pace slows to the rhythm of the tide, and highland villages where mist clings to pine forests. While scooters dominate the roads, a bicycle offers a quieter, deeper engagement: the scent of frangipani as you pedal past a family compound, the sound of gamelan drifting from a temple ceremony, the sight of farmers guiding water through centuries-old subak irrigation channels. In Ubud, Sidemen, Munduk, and the southern Bukit Peninsula, bicycles unlock a Bali that moves at human speed.

Required documents may vary depending on the rental company, but common rules are as follows: 1) you don't need any drivers license to rent a bicycle; 2) some deposit may be required for a bike which will be returned at the end. Always check the terms of an exact rental company before booking.

On our website you can rent the following types of bicycles: classic bikes, city commuters, hybrid, mountain bikes (MTB), cruisers, comfort models, folding bikes, tricycles, and electric bicycles. In Bali, MTBs with front suspension are the most practical — not for extreme trails, but for handling the uneven edges of rice-field paths, gravel access roads to waterfalls, and the occasional pothole on rural lanes. Hybrid and city bikes work well in flatter zones like Seminyak, Sanur, and the coastal road to Nusa Dua. Electric bicycles are increasingly available for the climbs in central Bali — the 5-kilometre ascent from Tegalalang to Kintamani, for instance, becomes manageable even in humidity.

Available manufacturers include Trek, Giant, Specialized, Cannondale, Cube, Scott, Merida, BSA, and Polygon (a leading Indonesian brand). Bikes are maintained for tropical conditions — rust-resistant chains, sealed bearings, and durable tyres suited to mixed pavement and light off-road use. Helmets are provided upon request, and while not legally required, they are strongly recommended for descents and busier roads.

When you make a reservation of a bicycle you also can order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, GPS navigation, clip pedals, side cases, rear rack, basket, light, gloves, speedometer, individual guide or tour, full insurance, one-way rental, delivery to hotel, delivery to the sea port, or delivery to the airport.

Ten places where a bicycle reveals Bali’s soul:

  1. Tegalalang Rice Terraces (Ubud) – Early morning, before crowds, mist rising from paddies
  2. Campuhan Ridge Walk extension (Ubud) – Paved access road, panoramic valley views
  3. Sidemen Valley circuit – Quiet, terraced hills, traditional thatched homes
  4. Sanur Beach promenade – Flat, dedicated path, sunrise views
  5. Munduk village and coffee plantation loops – Highland cool, jungle waterfalls
  6. Nusa Dua coastal path – Smooth, low-traffic, luxury-resort buffer zone
  7. Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) periphery – Historic site, shaded approach
  8. Penglipuran Village – Preserved Bali Aga architecture, pedestrian-friendly core
  9. Amed coastal track (Jemeluk to Bunutan) – Black-sand beaches, coral views
  10. Bukit Peninsula cliff roads (Uluwatu approach) – Dramatic ocean vistas, minimal traffic

Most of our bike rentals in Bali has many years of experience and will provide you with a brand new bicycle, helmet, lock, map with cycle routes and friendly service. Number of these companies counting every day, so if you want to rent a bicycle on Bali, just use the search form on the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
