Žabljak sits higher than any other town in the Balkans, and the moment you leave its main street on two wheels, you understand why people come here. Within twenty minutes you can be circling the still water of Crno jezero (Black Lake) with Meded peak mirrored on the surface, or grinding up toward Sedlo Pass, the highest paved road in Montenegro. This is a place built for a bike, not a bus.
Traffic in Žabljak is light, the town itself is tiny, and Durmitor National Park unfolds right at its edge along quiet paved lanes and gravel forest tracks rather than the busy coastal roads you'd fight elsewhere in Montenegro. A basic bike is plenty for the town and the short hop to Black Lake; for the bigger days — Sedlo, the Tara Bridge, the full Durmitor Ring — an e-bike turns serious climbing into a manageable, enjoyable ride. If you want to rent a bike in Žabljak, this is exactly the kind of place where it pays off.
For an ordinary bicycle there's no licence or registration to worry about — anyone can ride. A minimum age applies at most rental shops, and a deposit is usually held on a card or in cash, sometimes alongside a passport copy; the exact amount depends on the shop and the machine. Bring your ID and you're set.
A basic city or trekking bike runs EUR 3–8 per day in low season, while a standard mountain bike is closer to EUR 15–25 per day in high season. If you want an e-MTB for the bigger climbs, expect EUR 50–60 per day, or around EUR 30 for a half-day.
High season runs through July and August, when Durmitor is busiest and prices sit at their peak — book ahead if you're set on those dates. May–June and September are the sweet spot: cooler, less crowded, and noticeably cheaper for the same rides. Outside that window the highlands turn cold and wet fast, so check conditions before planning a Sedlo or Durmitor Ring trip in the shoulder months.
Montenegro drives on the right. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, but they're strongly recommended given the mountain roads — narrow, unbarriered, and shared with tour buses on the Durmitor Ring and Tara routes. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h limit for motor traffic, 80 km/h on the open road outside town, though on a bike your own pace and caution around blind hairpins matter more than any posted number. The blood alcohol limit is effectively zero, so save the local rakija for after the ride.
