Las Galeras sits at the far end of the Samaná peninsula, where the paved road runs out and the real adventure begins. This is a village of dirt tracks and palm-lined coast, and the best way to see it is on two wheels — puttering past fishing boats on La Playita, climbing the coastal trail toward the cliffs of Cabo Cabrón, or riding the winding road to the waterfall at El Limón. If you rent a scooter in Las Galeras, you get to chase down beaches most visitors never reach, at your own pace and on your own schedule.
This is a small village with almost no traffic, which makes it forgiving territory for a first-time rider. What it lacks in traffic it makes up for in rough surfaces: many of the roads out to the beaches are unpaved, rutted, or turn to mud after rain, and parking at a trailhead beats hunting for space with a car. A light, nimble scooter handles this terrain far better than a rental car, and it lets you string together two or three beaches in a single day without ever waiting on a bus that may not come.
Officially, a scooter counts as a motorcycle in the Dominican Republic, so you need a licence valid for motorcycles — your home-country licence is normally enough, and an International Driving Permit is not required but is worth carrying anyway. Riders are usually expected to be at least 18. Rental shops will ask for a deposit, typically in cash or as a hold on your card; it's safer to offer a copy of your passport plus a bit more cash than to hand over the original.
Prices are quoted in DOP and move with demand through the year.
High season runs December to April, with a second busy stretch in July and August — book ahead, since prices climb and the best bikes go first. May–June and September–October are quieter and cheaper, though this window overlaps with hurricane season, so check the forecast before you set off toward Playa Rincón or Madama, as rain can wash out those tracks fast.
Traffic in the Dominican Republic keeps to the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, and while plenty of locals skip them, police do fine tourists who ride without one. Speed limits are lower in the village and higher on open road — watch for unmarked speed bumps and potholes once the sun goes down, since street lighting is scarce outside town. Drink-driving laws are strict and enforced at checkpoints, particularly at night, so save the rum punch for after you've parked.
