Sarajevo doesn't reveal itself from a bus window. The old town sits tight in a narrow valley, and the moment you climb out of it the city opens into mountains that were shaping Olympic downhill runs back in 1984. Rent a motorcycle in Sarajevo and you can start your morning weaving through Baščaršija's cobbled lanes over coffee, then be climbing the switchbacks toward Jahorina or the canyon road south to Mostar by lunch. Few cities pack that much contrast into such a short ride.
This is a valley city ringed by steep hills, which makes it a natural fit for two wheels. The centre is dense, largely pedestrianised, and short on parking, so a car spends half its time looking for somewhere to sit. A motorcycle slips through the same streets in minutes and then keeps going where a car or tour bus can't easily follow — up to old fortress viewpoints, along former Olympic ski roads, or out toward the Neretva Canyon for a proper day trip. Once you've tried a motorcycle rental in Sarajevo, the bus timetable stops feeling like an option.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A depending on the engine size and power of the bike you choose. EU/EEA licences are accepted directly; if yours is from elsewhere, bring an International Driving Permit to go with it. Rental companies generally set their own minimum age, most commonly 18, higher for the larger machines. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or as a hold on your card, along with your passport or ID on file.
Prices in Sarajevo move a lot with the seasons. A standard motorcycle runs roughly 35–50 BAM per day in peak summer, while smaller scooters and mopeds can drop to around 10 BAM per day in the depths of winter. If you want something bigger — a newer touring or adventure bike for the mountain roads — budget closer to 80–120 BAM per day.
High season runs June through August, when prices peak and the mountain roads are busiest — book ahead if you're set on a specific bike. Low season stretches from November through March, with December to February the cheapest window, though snow closes many of the higher passes around Jahorina and Bjelašnica. For the best combination of open roads and mild weather, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Bosnia and Herzegovina drives on the right, with overtaking on the left. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on every scooter and motorcycle, and headlights must stay on — dipped — at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 50 km/h regardless. The blood-alcohol limit is just 0.03%, so riding after any drinking really isn't worth it. If you want to rent a scooter in Sarajevo or a full-size motorcycle, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
