Riga's Old Town feels made for wandering slowly on two wheels — cobbled lanes wind past the House of the Blackheads and open onto Town Hall Square before you've even had to think about a route. Park up near the edges of Vecrīga, walk the last stretch, then hop back on and glide out along the river to somewhere like Kalnciema Quarter, its wooden houses and weekend market a world away from the medieval core. A scooter lets you cover that contrast in an afternoon instead of choosing one half of the city over the other.

Riga rewards this kind of vehicle precisely because it's a city of two speeds. The historic center is dense and partly pedestrianized, so a scooter beats a car for parking and squeezing through narrow streets. Everywhere else, the terrain is flat and the avenues generous, which makes longer rides — out through the parks or all the way to the coast — genuinely easy rather than a slog.

Top 10 things to see in Riga by scooter

  1. Vecrīga (Riga Old Town) — the UNESCO-listed medieval core, with narrow streets you can reach and park near easily.
  2. Freedom Monument (Brīvības piemineklis) — the city's central landmark and a natural starting point for a loop.
  3. Riga Central Market (Rīgas Centrāltirgus) — the iconic Zeppelin-hangar halls, just a short ride from Old Town.
  4. House of the Blackheads (Melngalvju nams) — one of Riga's most photographed buildings, on Town Hall Square.
  5. Riga Cathedral (Rīgas Doms) — the largest medieval church in the Baltics, anchoring the Old Town route.
  6. Kalnciema Quarter (Kalnciema kvartāls) — a restored wooden-architecture district across the river, good for a slower cruise.
  7. Mežaparks — a large lakeside park with tree-lined avenues, ideal for an easy scenic ride.
  8. Āgenskalns — a left-bank neighborhood of wooden houses and a laid-back market square.
  9. Bastejkalns Park — canal-side greenery right by the center, worth a short stop.
  10. Jūrmala beach promenade — a Baltic Sea beach town about 25 km out, a classic longer day-trip on a scooter.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Riga?

For a standard 50cc scooter you'll need a category AM entitlement, which a full car licence normally covers. You'll also need to be of the minimum age set for AM riders, plus a passport or ID for the rental. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a card hold, when you pick up the bike — the exact amount depends on the rental company and model.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Riga?

A standard 50cc scooter runs from about 5-12 EUR per day in low season up to 18-30 EUR per day in high season, with larger or newer models priced from 25-45 EUR per day.

  • Prices are lowest from December to February.
  • They climb steadily through spring and peak in July-August.
  • Booking a little ahead for summer dates helps you lock in the better rate.

When to book a rental scooter in Riga?

High season runs June to August, when Riga is at its busiest and prices sit at their yearly peak — that's the window to book early. Low season stretches from November to March, when many operators run limited hours but prices drop to their cheapest. Late May, early June and September are a good middle ground: warm enough to ride comfortably, without the July-August crowds or cost.

Local traffic rules in Riga

Latvia drives on the right. Dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night — a rule visitors often forget. Helmets are compulsory for scooter and moped riders and their passengers. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, sometimes higher on certain main roads in summer, so always follow the posted signs. The blood alcohol limit is a strict 0.05%, so it's simplest to treat any drinking and riding as off-limits. Once you're set, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a scooter in Riga. Have a nice trip!
