Punta del Este's summer crowds turn the coast road into a slow crawl of rental cars and buses, but on a scooter you slip past all of it. One minute you're parked at the marina in Puerto de Punta del Este watching sea lions loll near the yachts, the next you're on the open road to Casapueblo, catching Carlos Páez Vilaró's whitewashed cliffside sculpture-house glowing at sunset. That's the appeal of a scooter rental in Maldonado: the whole peninsula and its coastline open up on your own schedule.

Maldonado suits two wheels because its best spots are strung along a coast that's short on distance and long on charm — five to thirty kilometres apart, flat, and paved the whole way. A car struggles for parking at Playa Brava or squeezes down narrow lanes near the port; a scooter just pulls up. That makes it easy to string together a beach, a lighthouse and a village lunch in one afternoon, something a car-bound itinerary in high season rarely allows.

Top 10 things to see in Maldonado by scooter

  1. Casapueblo (Punta Ballena) — Carlos Páez Vilaró's whitewashed cliffside sculpture-house, now a museum and hotel, with a famous sunset viewpoint over the Atlantic.
  2. La Mano de Punta del Este (Playa Brava) — the iconic half-buried hand sculpture, one of the most photographed spots in the country and an easy ride from Maldonado.
  3. Puerto de Punta del Este — a marina lined with yachts and sea lions, with seafood restaurants along the peninsula loop.
  4. Faro de Punta del Este — a historic lighthouse near the port, good for a short detour with views over the bay.
  5. Playa Mansa — a calm bay-side beach along Rambla Williman, with the peninsula skyline in view.
  6. Playa Brava — the ocean-facing beach next to La Mano, with surf and an open coastal road.
  7. José Ignacio — a quiet fishing village turned chic getaway about 30km east, a classic longer excursion along the coast road.
  8. Faro de José Ignacio — a working lighthouse marking the village, with open views of the point and beaches on both sides.
  9. Laguna del Sauce — a large inland lagoon offering a scenic alternative route away from summer coastal traffic.
  10. Punta Ballena (mirador) — hilltop viewpoints above the Casapueblo bay, especially popular for sunset rides.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Maldonado?

You'll generally need a motorcycle-category licence — Uruguay doesn't let a plain car licence cover a 50cc moped the way some countries do. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, often above the national driving age of 18, so check this when booking. An International Driving Permit isn't formally required, but it's worth carrying alongside your home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, along with your passport at pickup.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Maldonado?

A basic scooter runs roughly 200-300 UYU per day in low season, climbing to around 700-1200 UYU per day in high season, when Punta del Este's summer crowds push demand up. Larger or automatic models can run 1.5 to 2 times the basic rate year-round.

  • Cheapest from May to September, well outside the tourist rush.
  • Priciest from December to February, with January the absolute peak.
  • Semana de Turismo (Easter week) brings a smaller price spike too.

When to book a rental scooter in Maldonado?

High season runs December to February, peaking in January, when Punta del Este fills up and prices follow. Low season is June to August, with the best balance of mild weather and thinner crowds falling in October-November and March-April. Booking a few weeks ahead is wise for December and January; outside that window, availability is more relaxed.

Local traffic rules in Maldonado

Uruguay drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers alike, and the rule is actively enforced. Speed limits run roughly 45-60 km/h in town, around 90 km/h on rural rutas, and up to about 110 km/h on the Ruta Interbalnearia. Alcohol tolerance is zero — 0.0 g/L — with roadside breath testing in place, so any drinking and riding is off the table. Daytime headlights are compulsory on inter-city routes, and it's worth avoiding the rural rutas after dark, since they're poorly lit and shared with farm traffic.
