Centurion moves at a different pace than downtown Pretoria, but that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. Weave along the Centurion Lake Boardwalk near Centurion Mall on a quiet evening, then head out to Rietvlei Nature Reserve the next morning where grassland loops open up and antelope graze right beside the road. A scooter puts both of those moments — and everything between them — within easy reach, without waiting on a taxi or hunting for parking.
This is low-rise, spread-out suburban territory, built around arterial roads rather than a dense old-town core, so distances that feel long on foot are 10–20 minute hops by scooter. It also sits right next to Pretoria, meaning sights like the Union Buildings or Church Square are a short ride away rather than a full excursion. Parking, which can be a headache in a car at busy landmarks, is a non-issue on two wheels — you pull up, lock up, and walk straight in.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence — South Africa uses code A1 for smaller-capacity machines and code A for unrestricted ones, since an ordinary car licence doesn't cover scooters. Check with the operator which class your chosen bike falls under. Most rental companies ask for a minimum age of 21, and you'll need an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. A security deposit, usually held on a credit card in your name, is standard practice too.
Average rental prices run from 100–150 ZAR per day in low season up to 200–350 ZAR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 300–500 ZAR per day.
December to January is high season, driven by summer school holidays, so prices sit at their highest and availability gets tight — book early if you're travelling then. June and July, in the middle of the Southern Hemisphere winter, are the cheapest and quietest months. For the best riding weather without the peak-season rates, March to May and September to November are a solid middle ground.
South Africa drives on the left, so overtaking happens on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 60 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on freeways unless signs say otherwise. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 g/100 ml, and roadblocks are common, so it's not worth testing. You'll also notice slower traffic pulling onto the paved shoulder to let faster vehicles pass — a widespread local habit, but ride carefully around it since pedestrians use that same shoulder.
