Arusha has a rhythm all its own — safari trucks idling by the clock tower, coffee farms rolling out toward Mount Meru, market stalls spilling onto the road. A scooter fits that rhythm better than any minibus ever could. Rent a scooter in Arusha and you can be paddling a canoe at Lake Duluti or wandering the stalls of Tengeru Market within half an hour, with nobody's schedule but your own to answer to.
Arusha's landmarks aren't clustered downtown — they're scattered in a loose ring 10 to 30 kilometres out, linked by decent paved roads with traffic that's busy but rarely aggressive. Walking won't get you to Meserani or Usa River, and a car with a driver feels like overkill for a quick coffee-farm detour. A scooter splits the difference: fast enough to clear the congestion around the central market, nimble enough to pull over the moment something catches your eye.
You'll need a valid motorcycle entitlement on your home licence — a car-only licence isn't enough — plus an International Driving Permit. Most operators set their own minimum age above Tanzania's legal driving age of 18, so check this when you book. A deposit is standard practice; where possible, opt for a cash deposit over handing over your passport.
A basic automatic scooter runs roughly 12,000–15,000 TZS per day in low season, climbing to about 20,000–35,000 TZS in high season. Larger or newer models cost more, typically 35,000–50,000+ TZS per day.
Book ahead if you're travelling June to October or from late December to February — these are Arusha's busiest, priciest months. April and May, the long rainy season, bring the lowest prices and the quietest roads, though wet conditions can make some unpaved stretches slippery. November's short rains are milder, with brief afternoon showers rather than sustained wet weather, and prices stay reasonable.
Tanzania drives on the left, with overtaking on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger. Speed limits sit around 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on the open road, with frequent speed bumps and checks through villages. Drink-driving carries real penalties, so the safest rule is simple: zero alcohol before you ride. Carry your licence, IDP and rental documents at all times — roadside checks are routine, and night riding is best avoided given unlit vehicles and unmarked potholes.
