Bern doesn't look like quad-bike territory at first glance — the Old Town's cobbled arcades and the Zytglogge clock tower are best explored on foot. But step just past the UNESCO core and the terrain opens up fast: hills roll south toward Gurten, the Aare carves its valley toward Thun, and farmland stretches out through the Emmental. That's where a quad earns its keep. Climb to the Rosengarten for the postcard view over the river bend and the Old Town skyline, then keep going and let the road pull you out past Lake Thun's mountain backdrops or up into the quiet switchbacks of Gantrisch Nature Park.
The reason this city suits a quad rather than a scooter comes down to elevation and distance. Bern's centre is compact and largely closed to cars, so you won't be riding through the arcades anyway — you'll be using it as your launch point. From there, the ground climbs steadily toward Gurten and Gantrisch, and the countryside routes toward Thun, Brienz and the Emmental run well beyond comfortable walking range. A quad handles those grades and longer stretches with more stability than a scooter, without needing the open road commitment of a full motorcycle tour.
Quads count as motor vehicles in Switzerland, so a bicycle or moped licence won't cover you — you'll need at least a category B car licence (light quads may fall under B1). Rental companies commonly ask for a minimum age of 18 to 25 and a minimum period of holding your licence. An International Driving Permit isn't strictly required if your national licence is valid, though it's worth carrying if your licence isn't in Latin script. Expect to leave a deposit as a credit-card hold; the amount is higher than for a bicycle or scooter given the size and value of the vehicle.
Average rental price is CHF 55–70 per day during low season, rising to CHF 90–140 during high season. Larger-engine or newer quads run CHF 150–220 per day.
High season runs June to September, when the countryside routes toward Thun and the Emmental are at their best and prices sit at their highest. Low season, November to March, brings lower prices but also colder, wetter conditions and reduced operator availability — not ideal for touring anyway. If you're planning a summer trip, book a few weeks ahead; May and early October can be a good compromise for quieter roads and milder prices.
Switzerland drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for quad riders and passengers, no exceptions. Daytime running lights must stay on at all times, even in bright sunshine. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, though many streets in Bern itself drop to 30 or even 20 km/h. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, with a near-zero limit for new drivers. If your route takes you onto a motorway or expressway, you'll need the annual vignette displayed on the quad.
