Vilnius is a city that rewards a rider. You could park at the edge of the Old Town, walk its cobbled lanes for an hour, then swing a leg over your bike and be on the road to Trakai Island Castle within twenty minutes — red brick walls rising straight out of Lake Galvė, with none of the parking headaches a car would bring you. Climb up to Gediminas' Castle Tower at sunset, or cross the river into Užupis, the self-declared bohemian republic with its own tongue-in-cheek constitution, and you start to feel less like a tourist ticking off sights and more like someone who actually lives here.

The Old Town itself is best done on foot, but the real reason to rent a motorcycle in Vilnius is what sits just beyond it. A ring of countryside sights — Trakai, Kernavė, Europos Parkas, Verkiai — lies 15 to 50 km out along quiet, well-paved roads, and a bike covers that whole radius in a single day. Traffic outside the center is light, the terrain rolls gently between forest and lake, and riding here feels like an experience in its own right, not just a way to get from A to B.

Top 10 things to see in Vilnius by motorcycle

  1. Gediminas' Castle Tower — hilltop tower above the Old Town with the city's best panoramic viewpoint, reached by a short, scenic ride up Castle Hill.
  2. Vilnius Old Town & Cathedral Square — the UNESCO-listed historic core; park up and wander the cobbled streets, cathedral and Bernardine gardens on foot.
  3. Hill of Three Crosses — an iconic monument overlooking the Old Town, a favourite sunset viewpoint just minutes from the center.
  4. Užupis — the self-declared bohemian "republic" across the river, full of street art, cafés and its own satirical constitution.
  5. Vilnius TV Tower — the tallest structure in the country, with an observation deck and rotating café a quick ride from downtown.
  6. Trakai Island Castle — a classic day-trip roughly 28 km west, a red-brick lakeside castle on Lake Galvė and one of Lithuania's most photographed sights.
  7. Verkiai Palace and Regional Park — a neoclassical palace and forested riverside park along the Neris, a relaxed scenic loop just north of the city.
  8. Europos Parkas — an open-air sculpture park marking the geographic center of Europe, a pleasant countryside ride northeast of Vilnius.
  9. Kernavė Archaeological Site — UNESCO World Heritage hillforts and an Iron Age settlement roughly 35 km away, a good longer countryside route.
  10. Paneriai Memorial — a sobering WWII memorial forest just outside the city, reachable via a short, easy ride.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Vilnius?

The licence class depends on the bike: an A1 licence covers up to 125cc from age 16, A2 covers mid-range machines from 18, and a full A licence is needed for anything unrestricted, from age 24 (or 20 with two years on A2). In practice, most rental companies set their own minimums well above the legal floor, typically 18–21 and higher for larger displacement bikes, so check before you book. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. A deposit is standard, usually held on a card and scaled to the size of the bike.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Vilnius?

A standard scooter or small-to-mid motorcycle runs 25–35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 45–70 EUR in high season. Larger touring or sport motorcycles start around 70–120+ EUR per day.

  • Prices climb through the summer, peaking in July and August.
  • December to February is the cheapest window, though many rental outlets scale back availability over winter.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Vilnius?

High season runs June to August, when demand and prices both peak — book a couple of weeks ahead if you want your pick of bikes. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest roads and the lowest rates, though cold and rain make riding less appealing. May, June and September strike the best balance: warm enough to enjoy the countryside routes, without the peak-season crowds or prices.

Local traffic rules in Vilnius

Lithuania drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a moped, scooter or motorcycle. Dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night, year-round. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on rural roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways in summer, dropping to 110 km/h from November through March. The blood alcohol limit is 0.4 g/L, but riders on two wheels are held to zero tolerance, and enforcement is strict — so plan to ride sober.
