Tbilisi's Old Town looks made for two wheels — a tangle of steep cobbled lanes climbing toward Narikala Fortress, where the whole city and the Kura River spread out below you. Ride up in twenty minutes, park almost anywhere, and you've earned the best view in town without queueing for a cable car. From there the roads only get better: within an hour you can be standing under the striking arches of Jvari Monastery above Mtskheta, or climbing the switchbacks of the Georgian Military Highway toward Gudauri.
A car struggles with what makes Tbilisi interesting. Parking near the sulphur baths or Narikala is scarce, the Old Town's streets are narrow and one-way, and traffic through the center backs up fast at peak hours. A scooter or motorcycle slips through all of that, and it's also simply the right tool for the region around the city — Georgia's best sights aren't in Tbilisi itself but strung along smooth, well-paved mountain roads that reward riding rather than sitting in a bus. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Tbilisi, this is a city built for exactly that kind of freedom.
For scooters, agencies usually expect an AM or A1 category licence, though many will also accept a full car licence for smaller-capacity machines — it's worth confirming with the specific renter. Larger motorcycles require a full A-category licence or the equivalent endorsement on your home licence; a car licence alone won't cover them. Most rental shops set a minimum age around 18, and some ask for 21 or a minimum amount of riding experience. An IDP isn't strictly required but is worth carrying, especially if your licence isn't in Latin script. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a card hold, scaled to the value of the bike, along with a copy of your passport.
A small-to-midsize bike or scooter runs roughly 70–90 GEL per day in low season and 100–150 GEL per day in high season, while larger adventure bikes such as BMW GS-class or KTM Adventure models can run 250–400+ GEL per day in season.
High season runs June through September, peaking in July and August, when rates and demand are both at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop but some mountain-adjacent outlets reduce hours, since routes like the Georgian Military Highway can close temporarily after snowfall. For the best balance of open roads, mild weather and lower prices, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Georgia drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on mopeds, scooters and motorcycles. Standard speed limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them and 110 km/h on motorways unless signs say otherwise. Drink-driving is treated with near-zero tolerance, so don't ride after any alcohol. Once you're out on the Georgian Military Highway or the roads toward Kakheti, watch for blind hairpins, unfenced drops and livestock on the road — ride defensively and give yourself more time than the distance suggests.
