Graz doesn't announce itself the way Vienna or Salzburg do, and that's exactly the point. The old town is a tight, walkable knot of red rooftops beneath the Schlossberg, but the region around it is where the real riding starts — vineyard hills rolling south toward Slovenia, castle towns tucked into gorges, and alpine passes waiting less than an hour away. Climb out of the city on a motorcycle and within thirty minutes you're leaning through the bends of the Südsteirische Weinstraße with a wine tavern at every second turn, or pointing toward Riegersburg Castle, sitting improbably on top of an old volcanic cone. This is Styria at its best, and it rewards exactly the kind of traveller willing to go looking for it.
A car feels like the wrong tool here. Graz's centre is largely pedestrianized, parking is scarce, and the attractions that make this region worth visiting — wine roads, mountain passes, castle villages — sit thirty to ninety minutes out on narrow, winding country roads built for exactly this kind of riding. A motorcycle slips into any free corner outside a tavern or castle gate, turns a tedious public-transport day trip into a proper loop, and lets you feel the switchbacks instead of just watching them scroll past a car window. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Graz, this is a city built around the idea.
The licence you need depends on the bike: an A1 licence covers machines up to 125cc, A2 covers restricted mid-power models, and a full A category is required for anything unrestricted. EU licences are accepted as they are; if yours isn't in Latin script, carry an International Driving Permit alongside the original just in case. Minimum age follows the EU scheme — 16 for A1, 18 for A2, 24 for unrestricted A — though most rental companies set their own, often higher, minimum. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a hold on your credit card, along with photo ID.
Prices move with the season and the size of the bike.
July and August are peak season, when demand — and prices — climb across the region. November through March is low season, and quieter still up in the mountains, where some rental operations scale back for winter. If you can, aim for May, June or early September: the alpine passes are open, the weather is settled, and you'll share the wine road with far less traffic than in midsummer. Booking a week or two ahead is sensible in high season; low season is far more forgiving.
Austria drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorcycle or scooter, and headlights stay on — dipped — at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways, though a motorway vignette is required to use them. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to a near-zero 0.01% for probationary licence holders. Ride the wine road, ride the passes, and use our search form to rent a motorcycle in Graz whenever you're ready. Have a nice trip!
