Vilnius rewards anyone willing to cover ground on two wheels. Pedal out from the cobbled lanes of the Old Town and within minutes you're crossing into Užupis, the self-declared bohemian republic with its own tongue-in-cheek constitution and murals around every corner, or following the Neris river past Bernardine Garden toward the wooded quiet of Vingis Park. A short climb rewards you with the view from Gediminas' Tower over the two rivers and the terracotta rooftops below — the kind of perspective you simply don't get on foot.
What makes Vilnius so rewarding by bike is how the city is laid out. The Old Town itself is largely pedestrianized and compact enough to wander, but the best of Vilnius spreads out along the Neris on flat, connected cycle paths that link the center to the outer districts. That means you can cover in an afternoon what would take days walking, without ever needing a car. Terrain-wise there's little to worry about — a basic city bike handles everything comfortably, bar that one short pull up to the castle.
Good news: no licence is required to rent a bicycle, at any age. There's usually no minimum age enforced either, though rental shops may ask for ID and a small deposit, often held on a card, before handing over the bike. No international driving permit is needed — that's only relevant if you're also considering a scooter or car.
Bicycle rental in Vilnius is easy on the wallet. Expect to pay around 3–6 EUR per day in low season and 8–15 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 15–25 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, when the weather is warmest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with cheaper rates but colder, wetter rides. If you want the best balance, late May, June, and September offer warm days without the peak-season crowds or prices — a smart window for booking ahead.
Lithuania drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet, and it's worth wearing one regardless of age for the descents around the Old Town. Cyclists are required to use a cycle path wherever one exists, need front and rear lights after dark, and should wear a reflective vest if riding outside built-up areas at night. Speed limits for vehicles sharing the road with you run at 50 km/h in town, so traffic tends to stay manageable. If you're combining cycling with a night out, note that Lithuania enforces a strict 0.4 g/L blood alcohol limit, with zero tolerance for some rider categories — best to keep riding and drinking on separate days.
