Ottawa doesn't feel like a capital city so much as a park with a government in it, and the best way to find that out is from a saddle. Roll out along the Rideau Canal pathway at sunrise and you'll have the UNESCO-listed waterway almost to yourself before the towers of Parliament Hill catch the light. An hour later you can be locking up outside a café in the ByWard Market, and by lunch you're tracing the Ottawa River Pathway out toward Westboro with the water on one side and the city falling away behind you.
Few capitals are this generous to cyclists. Ottawa is flat, its downtown pathways link up almost end to end, and most of the sights that matter sit under 30–45 minutes apart by bike — distances that would eat up a whole afternoon on foot or waiting for buses. The network even carries you across the river into Quebec, so a single ride can cover two provinces without ever touching heavy traffic. If you're weighing up whether to **rent a bicycle in Ottawa**, this pathway system is really the whole argument.
You don't need a licence to rent a bicycle anywhere in Canada, and there's no minimum age. Bring ID and expect a modest deposit or card hold at pickup — nothing like the deposits asked for motorised rentals. An IDP isn't relevant here since no licence is required in the first place. Choosing an e-bike instead is worth knowing about too: they're capped at 32 km/h and 500 W, and while most provinces don't require a licence, some set a minimum rider age, commonly 16.
A standard city bike runs roughly CAD 5–10 per day in low season and CAD 20–35 per day during the summer peak; e-bikes and higher-end models sit around CAD 35–55 per day. Our own listing starts near €3/day, converting to roughly CAD 4–5.
High season runs June to August, stretching into early September, and this is when the canal pathway and riverside routes are liveliest — book a few days ahead if you're arriving around Canada Day. Low season, November through March, brings the cheapest rates but also snow and ice on much of the network, so it suits fat-bike or occasional rides rather than a full day out. May, September and early October are the sweet spot: mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices well below the summer peak.
Canada drives on the right, and Ontario only requires bicycle helmets for riders under 18 — adults can ride without one, though we'd still recommend wearing one on shared pathways. Posted speed limits in the city are generally 50 km/h, dropping in school and playground zones, so pathways stay comfortably calm compared to road traffic. If you're mixing in any motorised rental, note that Canada's legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with roadside penalties kicking in as low as 0.05% in several provinces.
