Kathmandu doesn't reveal itself from a taxi window. The real city — incense drifting through Ashok Vinayak's alleys, monks circling Boudhanath at dusk, the valley opening up gold and hazy from a hillside above Chandragiri — is something you reach by pedalling into it. Rent a bicycle in Kathmandu and you can drift from the packed lanes around Kathmandu Durbar Square out to Patan's quieter courtyards, or push further to Bhaktapur's medieval brick streets, without ever waiting on a driver or a bus schedule.

The old city was built for feet and handcarts, not engines, so its lanes stay narrow, twisted and often jammed with parked cars and idling motorbikes — exactly where a bicycle has the advantage. Once you're past the ring road, the valley turns rolling and occasionally steep, rewarding riders with decent fitness or, for the climbs up to Nagarkot or Shivapuri, an e-bike or geared mountain bike built for the terrain.

Top 10 things to see in Kathmandu by bicycle

  1. Kathmandu Durbar Square — the UNESCO-listed old royal palace complex, a natural starting point for any ride through the city.
  2. Boudhanath Stupa — one of the largest stupas in the world, ringed by monasteries and cafes, reached on an easy flat ride east of the centre.
  3. Pashupatinath Temple — a major Hindu temple complex on the Bagmati River, close enough to Boudhanath to combine both in one loop.
  4. Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) — a hilltop stupa with sweeping views over the valley, a short climb west of the old city.
  5. Patan Durbar Square — a Newar palace square across the Bagmati in Lalitpur, a quick ride south from central Kathmandu.
  6. Bhaktapur Durbar Square — a well-preserved medieval town about 13 km east, a popular half-day out-and-back.
  7. Garden of Dreams — a peaceful neoclassical garden near Thamel, a welcome rest stop between old-city rides.
  8. Chandragiri Hills — a climb to the valley's southwestern rim, rewarding riders with cable-car access and wide viewpoints.
  9. Nagarkot — a hill town roughly 32 km out, famous for sunrise Himalayan views and a classic longer route or overnight ride.
  10. Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park — forested hills on the valley's northern edge, laced with dirt roads that are a favourite for off-road and mountain-bike riders.

What do you need to rent a bicycle in Kathmandu?

Nothing official — no licence and no International Driving Permit are required to hire a bicycle. Rental shops generally expect riders to be adults, and you'll almost always leave a deposit, usually your passport held for the rental period, or sometimes a photocopy plus a cash deposit instead.

How much does it cost to rent a bicycle in Kathmandu?

A basic city or mountain bike runs 400–600 NPR per day in low season, rising to 700–1200 NPR during the busier tourist months. If you want a geared mountain bike or e-bike for routes like Nagarkot or Shivapuri, expect 1500–3000+ NPR per day.

  • Prices climb in October–November and again in March–April, the two peak trekking windows.
  • They drop during the June–August monsoon and over the December–January cold season, when tourist numbers thin out.

When to book a rental bicycle in Kathmandu?

October and November bring the clearest mountain views and the busiest demand, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. March and April run a close second, with spring light and good visibility. If you'd rather skip crowds and pay less, the monsoon months of June to August or the quieter, cooler stretch in December and January keep prices low, even if the mountains hide behind cloud more often.

Local traffic rules in Kathmandu

Nepal drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory, and while the rule was written with motorised riders in mind, it's worth wearing one on a bicycle too, especially heading into the hills. Alcohol enforcement is strict and effectively zero-tolerance, with checks common around the city. Urban speeds stay low, generally around 40 km/h, though on a bicycle the real limit is usually the traffic and the road surface, not the signage. Kathmandu's core is also a no-horn zone, a rare pocket of quiet compared to the rest of the country.
