Amsterdam rewards anyone willing to pedal. Slip out of the centre on two wheels and you can drift along the Prinsengracht past the Anne Frank House, cut through the Jordaan's narrow canal streets, then coast into Vondelpark for a breather under the trees — all before lunch. A bike here isn't a novelty; it's how you actually get close to the city, at the pace locals set for themselves.
Amsterdam is famously flat and compact, with a cycling network so dense that a bike beats both walking and public transport for covering ground. Most major sights sit within thirty minutes of each other, cycle paths are separated from traffic almost everywhere, and parking a bike takes seconds compared with hunting for a car space. If you want to rent a bike in Amsterdam, you're simply doing what everyone around you is already doing.
None of this requires a licence — bicycles and e-bikes assisted up to 25 km/h can be ridden by anyone, with no legal minimum age and no IDP needed. Rental shops will usually ask for a deposit, often just a card pre-authorisation, and may hold your ID such as a passport while you ride. It's about as simple as travel logistics get.
Expect to pay 3–8 EUR per day in low season and 10–20 EUR per day in high season, with premium models such as e-bikes running 20–35 EUR per day.
High season runs April to September, peaking in July and August, when both prices and demand are at their strongest — book ahead if you're coming in summer. Low season, from November to February, is wetter and darker but far cheaper, and some rental spots outside the city centre even close for the winter. If you want the best weather without the summer crowds, May and September hit a good middle ground.
The Netherlands drives on the right, and cyclists follow the same side. There's no helmet requirement for ordinary cycling, though it's worth remembering if you later add a moped to your trip, since those riders do need one. Where a cycle path exists you're required to use it, and at night your bike needs a working front and rear light — police do check. Speed isn't really an issue on a bike, but do note that the alcohol limit of 0.5 g/l applies to cyclists too, and holding a phone while riding is illegal and fined. Traffic from the right generally has priority at unmarked junctions, and trams take precedence over bikes.
