Stalden marks the point where the Mattertal splits toward car-free Zermatt and the Saastal branches off toward Saas-Fee — and it's exactly the kind of fork in the road that makes riders grin. From here, a short warm-up run up the valley opens onto some of the greatest pass roads in the Alps: the hairpins of the Simplon Pass, the long sweeps of the Furka and Grimsel, the quiet heights of the Nufenen. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Stalden, this is where a day's ride turns into glacier views, hospice stops at the Great St Bernard, and villages most tourists never reach.
A car simply isn't built for this terrain. Zermatt and Saas-Fee are both closed to private traffic, and the roads connecting them — along with the passes above — are narrow, twisting and switchback-heavy in a way that rewards two wheels and punishes four. A motorcycle rental in Stalden lets you park where a car can't, thread hairpins at your own pace, and reach places like Gspon that are really only practical on something narrow and nimble.
For anything up to 125cc, category A1 covers you from age 16; larger machines need the full A category, usually with an age or experience threshold before you get unrestricted access. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required, but rental companies commonly ask for the licence to be held a minimum period and set their own minimum age, often 18 to 25. Expect a deposit taken as a credit-card hold, higher for larger touring bikes than for small models.
Expect around 25-35 CHF per day in low season, rising to 45-70 CHF per day in high season. A larger touring or adventure bike, such as a BMW GS-class machine built for the passes above Stalden, typically runs 60-90 CHF per day.
High season runs June to September, when the passes are clear and prices climb accordingly. Low season, November to March, brings cheaper rates, but most of the big passes — Furka, Grimsel, Nufenen, Great St Bernard — are closed under snow from around late October until late May or June. Booking ahead for July and August is worth it; outside that window, May, June, September and early October offer the best balance of open roads and lighter crowds.
Switzerland drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorcycle or scooter, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Standard limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100-120 km/h on expressways and motorways — watch for lower 30 km/h and 20 km/h zones in villages. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, with a near-zero limit for novice riders. Speed enforcement is strict and fines scale with income, so it pays to stay within limits, especially on the passes.
