Carvoeiro rewards anyone willing to move slowly along its coast, and a bicycle is the best way to do it. Pedal a few minutes east and you're standing above Algar Seco, where the cliffs fold into sea caves and a café sits perched right on the rock. Keep going and the turquoise water of Praia da Marinha opens up below the road — one of the most photographed beaches in the Algarve, and one you can reach in a short, easy ride rather than a fight for parking.
The village centre is small and hilly, but the real draw isn't the centre — it's the string of coves, viewpoints and clifftop trail strung out between Carvoeiro, Lagos and Silves. Driving that stretch means squeezing a car into tight seasonal parking at every stop; a bike lets you hop from viewpoint to beach to café in short, flexible bursts, and you'll reach places most tourists driving past never stop for.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike, and there's no minimum age set by law. Most rental shops will still ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, and some ask to see ID — an international driving permit isn't needed for a bike, only for motorised vehicles.
A standard city or hybrid bike runs from EUR 3–5 per day in low season up to EUR 8–15 in high season. E-bikes, useful if you're tackling the hillier stretches toward Silves, cost more — roughly EUR 15–25 per day, and premium e-bikes or higher-end road and mountain bikes can reach EUR 20–30 per day.
High season runs June to September, peaking in July and August, when prices are at their highest and popular models can sell out — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November to March, is by far the cheapest time to rent, and the Algarve stays mild enough to ride comfortably nearly year-round. If you'd rather skip both the heat and the crowds, April to June and September to October hit the sweet spot of warm weather and lower prices.
Portugal drives on the right. Cyclists aren't required to wear a helmet unless they're under 16, though it's a sensible precaution on the coast road. The speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h, rising to 90 km/h on the open road outside town — keep an eye out for local traffic, since drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of space by law. If you're riding outside town at night or in poor visibility, lights and a reflective vest are required. Portugal's drink-driving limit is 0.5 g/l, so it's best to save the local wine for after you've parked the bike for the day.
