Picture the coastal road unspooling ahead of you, lagoon on one side and green peaks on the other, with nothing between you and Tahiti but a helmet and a full tank. A motorcycle turns the island into your own itinerary: pull over at Pointe Vénus for its black-sand beach and lighthouse, or keep going to the end of the line at Teahupo'o, where the road simply stops at one of the world's most famous surf breaks. This is the real way to see Tahiti — not from a tour bus window, but from the saddle.

The island rewards two wheels more than four. Tahiti Nui's belt road, the Route de Ceinture, loops the island in about 115 km, with light traffic once you clear Papeete, so a full circuit in a single day is easy on a bike and cramped in a car. Toward Tahiti Iti and Teahupo'o the road narrows and gets rougher, exactly where a motorcycle threads through comfortably and a car struggles, and roadside stops like grottoes and blowholes have no real parking — a bike just pulls onto the shoulder. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Tahiti, this is the terrain it was made for.

Top 10 things to see in Tahiti by motorcycle

  1. Pointe Vénus — black-sand beach and lighthouse where Captain Cook once observed the transit of Venus, an easy ride from Papeete.
  2. Grotte de Maraa — a roadside freshwater grotto draped in ferns and stalactites, a classic stop on the west coast.
  3. Cascades de Faarumai — three waterfalls just off the coastal road, reached by a short trail on the east side.
  4. Teahupo'o — the end-of-the-road surf village on Tahiti Iti, with a dramatic coastal ride to get there.
  5. Trou du Souffleur — a natural sea blowhole right beside the east coast road, worth a quick stop.
  6. Belvédère de Tahiti — a hillside viewpoint above Papeete, looking out over the lagoon to Moorea.
  7. Vallée de la Papenoo — a deep river valley on a rougher inland track, for a more adventurous detour off the coast road.
  8. Route de Ceinture — the round-island belt road that strings together most of Tahiti's beaches, marae and viewpoints in one loop.
  9. Cascade de Fautaua — a waterfall in the hills behind Papeete, reached by a short ride and a hike.
  10. Musée de Tahiti et des Îles — the island's main cultural and natural-history museum, a good first stop before touring further.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Tahiti?

As French territory, Tahiti follows French licence rules. For machines up to 125cc you need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a category B car licence held at least two years plus a short mandatory training course. Larger motorcycles fall under A2 or full category A. Rental companies commonly set their own minimum age, often 18 or higher for bigger machines, and will usually ask non-EU visitors for an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. A deposit is standard, taken as a card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return — ask the operator for the exact amount and insurance excess before booking.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Tahiti?

A basic scooter starts from around 5 EUR per day in low season, roughly 600 XPF, making it one of the cheapest ways to get around the island. Prices for a standard scooter or small motorcycle in high season run higher, and larger or premium motorcycles cost considerably more.

  • Low season: from about 5-15 EUR/day for a basic scooter.
  • High season: roughly 20-40 EUR/day for a standard scooter or small motorcycle.
  • Premium motorcycles: typically 60-120 EUR/day.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Tahiti?

July and August are the busiest and priciest months, driven by French metropolitan summer holidays and the Heiva festival, with a second peak around Christmas and New Year. For better rates and easier availability, aim for February-March or November, the shoulder period between the big holiday seasons. Booking a couple of weeks ahead is wise in high season, when the cheapest machines go first.

Local traffic rules in Tahiti

As in mainland France, traffic keeps to the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorised two-wheeler, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — unusual outside France but enforced here. Headlights stay on at all times, day and night. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h limit, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero for riders in their first three years of licence. Keep a reflective vest on the bike in case you need to stop roadside.

Extra services available

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
