Picture this: the sun catching Lake Ohrid as you round a bend on the coastal road, the old stone houses of the Old Town rising on one side and open water on the other. That's what a scooter buys you here — a way to slip between the cobbled lanes near Samuil's Fortress in the morning and be sipping coffee by the water at Sveti Naum Monastery in the afternoon, all without waiting on a bus timetable. Rent a scooter in Ohrid and the town stops being a checklist of sights and starts being a place you actually move through.
Ohrid's biggest draws aren't clustered downtown — they're strung out along 15 to 30 kilometres of winding lakeshore, plus a mountain pass that a car simply can't enjoy the way a scooter can. It's too far to walk, too scenic to rush past in a taxi, and the Old Town's narrow streets and scarce parking make full-size vehicles a hassle anyway. A scooter rental in Ohrid lets you pull over at a fishing village, a quiet cove or a lookout the moment you feel like it, which is really the whole point of a lake like this.
For most rental scooters here, a moped-class (AM) licence covers you, though in practice many local shops will also accept a full car licence for smaller machines — it's worth checking with your operator, since acceptance varies. No International Driving Permit is required. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as cash or a card pre-authorisation, along with your passport or ID at pickup. Minimum age is generally set by the individual rental company rather than law, so confirm this when booking.
Prices swing noticeably with the season. Our own listings start from around 300 MKD per day at the low end, with standard scooters typically running 600–900 MKD per day in high season, and larger or newer models reaching 1000–1500 MKD per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking sharply in July and August when the lakefront is at its busiest and prices climb accordingly — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with cheaper rates but fewer operators open. For the best mix of good weather, light traffic and reasonable prices, aim for May, June, September or early October.
North Macedonia drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on open roads outside town. The blood alcohol limit is a strict 0.05%, with zero tolerance for inexperienced riders, so it's best to skip the rakija before you ride. Keep your headlights on at all times, day or night, and take extra care on the Galičica pass — the edges are unguarded, the surface can be gravelly, and livestock sometimes wanders onto the road.
